Two of the association’s best defenses will tip off Sunday, December 1st as interconference foes the Utah Jazz play the Toronto Raptors in their first match against each other this season.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Raptors winning both matches. The Jazz hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 27 of their 45 matches
Utah Jazz
Currently, on a five-game road trip the Jazz has witnessed highs and lows. Utah began with back to back losses versus the Bucks and Pacers prior to the win versus Memphis and following Toronto will finish the trip in Philly.

Rudy Gobert’s presence was missed in Utah as he sat for a second game but returned to play versus the Pacers and Grizzlies. Ed Davis also returned to the lineup in Memphis after a 12-game absence.
In the 103-94 win over Memphis, Bojan Bogdanovic led the way with 33 points highlighted by a 16 point fourth quarter which was essential to the comeback in a game Utah trailed by 15 at the half.
The game was a roller coaster with the Grizzlies posting a 31-18 second quarter followed by the Jazz besting that with a 35-18 third quarter.
Gobert delivered a 13 point, 13 rebound double-double while Donovan Mitchell and Royce O’Neale scored 20 and 10 points respectively as the other double-figure contributors.
Nigel Williams-Goss missed the last two games with a toe sprain and is questionable to play Sunday.
Toronto Raptors
Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka have each missed the last 10 games for the Raptors with a broken thumb and ankle sprain respectively. Although the game report lists them as questionable don’t be surprised if they both return to the lineup Sunday.

Their return would be timely following the Raptors’ poorest shooting effort (36.9%) of the season in Orlando. The Raptors won behind the efforts of Norman Powell who dropped a career-high 33 points and via their defensive efforts.
Trailing at the half by seven and 11 early in the third the Raptors flipped the script winning the quarter 26-12. This included a period of 12 consecutive stops and a six-minute period where Toronto held the Magic scoreless.
Fred VanVleet added 22 points four assists and five rebounds. Pascal Siakam had a terrible shooting night (4 of 22) but was key to the defensive effort and helped everywhere else finishing with a double-double of 10 points, 13 rebounds and chipped in five assists.
For as much as the Magic are a tough team the Raptors shots just weren’t falling as the league’s best perimeter shooting team (39.5%) shot 28.9% on 11 for 38 from deep.
This match marks a four-game stint where the Raptors will face four elite clubs in the Jazz, Heat, Rockets and 76ers.
As mentioned Lowry and Ibaka are questionable but I’d bet they both play. Patrick McCaw (arthroscopic knee surgery) Stanley Johnson (groin) and Matt Thomas (distal phalanx fracture) are all out with McCaw and Johnson expected back early this month and Thomas likely out until the end of December.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 8-2 ATS in their last 10
- The Raptors are 8-1-1 in last 10 head to head
- Over Under is 7-3 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Utah Jazz vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
The Raptors are unbeaten on their home court (8-0) and are on a current six-game win streak.
Historically, Lowry doesn’t excel in his return from missing games tending to shoot poorly from the field until he shakes off the rust. Conversely, Siakam typically doesn’t have back to back poor shooting efforts.
The sidebar to this match is Lowry and Mike Conley were both drafted by Memphis and while there is a healthy respect between the point guards they always get up to play each other.
Games between the Jazz and Raptors are always physical with the x-factor being Bogdanovic who has been a Raptors killer in his days with Indiana. Still, the offensive depth of Toronto supersedes Utah and factoring in the crowd it favors the Raptors.
