Utah’s strength of schedule over this stretch of games served up a majority of sub .500 teams so there were questions of whether the Jazz was as good as the record indicated or simply beating the teams they should.
Turns out those questions held credence given the three consecutive losses by the Jazz as they faced two seeded clubs (Rockets and Nuggets) and a team (Spurs) in the chase pack for the eighth seed.
In the most recent game, the Jazz fell to a shorthanded Nuggets club on Thursday. Despite holding a five-point half time lead the Nuggets erased that via a 33-22 third quarter and held on through to the end game.
Jordan Clarkson almost single-handedly kept the Jazz in the match scoring 37 points. Rudy Gobert delivered a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Bojan Bogdanovic scored 18 while George Niang added 10 points as the other double-figure contributors. Donovan Mitchell didn’t score until late in the fourth as he shot an anemic 1 of 12 from the field.
Prior to the match Mitchell and Gobert learned they were both selected by coaches as reserves for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game.
On the season, Donovan Mitchell is the team leader in scoring (24.6) and steals (1.1). Rudy Gobert tops the rebounding (14.5), field goal percent (69.2%) and block (2.0) categories while Joe Ingles dishes the most assists (5.0).
Tony Bradley missed the last game with a right knee sprain and is questionable for this match.
Portland Trail Blazers
Winners of three in a row and four of their last five the Blazers are on a roll behind the leadership and hot shooting of their star Damian Lillard.
Over the five-game stretch, Lillard is averaging 45.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 1.0 steal and shooting a blistering 53.5 percent efficiency from deep on 14.2 attempts.
In the emotional return of the LA Lakers to the hardwood, it was Lillard who once more took charge with 48 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds.
Hassan Whiteside also collected a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds.
CJ McCollum pitched in 19 points and Gary Trent Jr. scored 10 points as the other double-figure contributors.
Two starters lead all the stat categories and with Damian Lillard topping scoring (29.4 points), assists (7.8) and steals (1.0). Hassan Whiteside tops rebounds (13.9), field goal percentage (60.9%), and blocks (3.1).
Carmelo Anthony elected to skip the game in LA while still processing his grief but should be available Saturday.
Skal Labissiere is out til mid-February with left knee inflammation. Jusuf Nurkic (leg) remains out until February and Zach Collins (shoulder) won’t return until March.
Rodney Hood (Achilles) will miss the remainder of the season.
