Sunday, February 27th, finds the Utah Jazz playing the Phoenix Suns for the third of four scheduled meetings this season. Phoenix won both prior matches this season on January 24th (115-109) and 26th (105-97). Utah will host the final match on April 8th between the clubs.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Jazz beating the Mavericks 114-109 while the Suns played a back-to-back winning 124-104 Thursday versus the Thunder and losing 102-117 to the Pelicans on Friday.
Last season, the squads met three times with Phoenix sweeping the regular-season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Jazz in 98 of their 191 matches.
Utah Jazz
The Jazz sits in the fourth seed entering the stretch run with work to do as they hold a 2.5 game edge over the fifth-place Mavericks and trail the third-place Grizzlies by 3.5 games. No doubt they want to retain home court in the first round but ideally would prefer to move up higher.
Either scenario is doable but in addition to the Jazz needing to string together a run of victories would also require the teams bookending them to simultaneously amass some losses.
With Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell both back they appear to have things in order having won seven of their last eight matches and returned from the break looking focused.
In the victory versus the Mavericks, the defense was on point and although Doncic delivered a double-double Utah kept him off balance with the youngster shooting 8 of 24.
Mitchell led the scoring effort with 34 points while Gobert posted a double-double effort of 14 points and 17 rebounds along with two assists and three blocks.
Bojan Bogdanovic (18), Mike Conley (15), and Jordan Clarkson (13) all registered double-digit scoring contributions.
Rudy Gay (knee) is questionable while Jared Butler (knee) was downgraded to doubtful for Sunday versus the Suns.
Phoenix Suns
Playing without Chris Paul is going to be a challenge as the Suns learned in their first two games back from the break. They routed the Thunder on Thursday but then had the tables turned on them the next night losing badly to the Pelicans.
Certainly, the addition of CJ McCollum was a factor, but the Suns realized precisely how much CP3 does for them in games where they need an extra kick offensively.
Although defense may be the larger concern for Monty Williams who watched his club fall behind by nine points in the opening frame and then cough up 42 points in the third quarter.
Devin Booker is being tasked to pick up much of the playing making in Paul’s absence as well as be the primary scorer and while he registered 30 points and five assists the team had only four players score in double-digits.
The other trio including Deandre Ayton (20), Cam Johnson (15), and Jae Crowder (12).
Cameron Payne (wrist) was downgraded to out while Aaron Holiday (ankle) is questionable Sunday versus the Jazz. Chris Paul (thumb) will miss six to eight weeks. Frank Kaminsky (knee), and Dario Saric (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Utah Jazz vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
This will be a true litmus test for the Suns and Booker who is likely to draw double-teams as the Jazz know limiting his playmaking will be the key to winning the match.
The offense ground to a halt several times versus New Orleans and with Rudy Gobert able to keep Ayton in check this could be a tough outing for the Suns.
