On March 11th, these teams were about to tip-off when everything came to a grinding halt. Rudy Gobert had tested positive for COVID-19. As patient zero of the NBA, Gobert became the domino that stopped the NBA and Major League Sports as we knew it before the pandemic.
Almost five months later the two teams will once again meet at center court to complete that game.
Utah Jazz
Much has changed since that March 11th postponed game. Donovan Mitchell also tested positive for COVID-19 and the relationship between himself and his big man isn’t exactly warm and fuzzy.
Factor in the loss of the Jazz’ main floor spacer Bojan Bogdanovic who underwent season-ending wrist surgery and this team doesn’t seem as dangerous as it did prior to the hiatus.
In truth, the Jazz wasn’t the typical Quin Snyder squad even before that point. They’ve moved to more of an offensive focus and while Rudy Gobert remains one of the best bigs in the NBA his style of play isn’t as coveted as it once was.
To replace the floor spacing of Bogdanovic the Jazz are hoping Mike Conley and Joe Ingles will pick up the slack and Jordan Clarkson can provide enough of an x-factor off the bench.
Oklahoma City Thunder
When Paul George, Russell Westbrook, and Jerami Grant were all traded in lieu of a ridiculously stocked draft closet everyone assumed OKC would be in full-on tank mode for the first time in franchise history.
Everyone expected Chris Paul and Danilo Gallinari would be gone well before the trade deadline. Instead, this group has become the best clutch time crew in the association and the veteran point guard has reminded everyone why he was oft referred to as the best leader in sports.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took a massive sophomore leap and the triple point guard lineup featuring him, Paul and Dennis Schroder have proven to be the most deadly to stop when games are on the line.
If the team wasn’t the Cinderella story of the season, then the return of Andre Roberson after more than 900 days off the court is. The mix of vets and youngsters has meshed perfectly including the rise of undrafted rookie Luguentz Dort.
The Thunder have produced the third-best record since Thanksgiving and while their weakness was perimeter prowess each of their youngsters seemingly perfected the stroke during the hiatus while Paul worked diligently as the NBPA president with stakeholders to make the Disney bubble a reality.
NBA Betting Trends:
- UTA are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
- Over is 16-5-1 in OKC last 22 games as a favorite.
- UTA are 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
Free Utah Jazz vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
Both teams will be dialed in for this match as the winner will take the series lead 2-1 and regardless if these two teams end up facing each other in the first round the Thunder will win.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder cover the spread
In the first game back Utah got lucky when the Pelicans coughed up a double-digit lead and failed to close out in clutch time. They won’t have that privilege versus the Thunder who’ll be drooling if they have to play in clutch time.
By virtue of beating the Pelicans, the Jazz gained another half-game for a 1.5 lead over the Thunder (and Rockets).
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
