Thursday, July 30, 2020, the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans tip off the NBA restart in the clubs’ fourth meeting of the season. The Jazz won the first two matches on November 23rd, (128-120), and January 6th (128-126) while the Pelicans won the last meeting on January 16th, 139-132 in overtime.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Jazz taking two of the three contests. The Jazz hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 38 of their 61 matches
Utah Jazz
When the NBA elected to suspend the season the domino that initiated the league’s decision was Jazz center Rudy Gobert who was the first player to test positive for COVID-19.
His All-Star co-star Donovan Mitchell followed suit putting pressure on the duo’s relationship. They return both stating everything is fine but there are questions how the fractured relationship could spill onto the hardcourt.
The Jazz is currently seeded in fourth holding a slim one-game edge over both the Thunder and Rockets with OKC their second game scheduled in the eight seeding matches.
More concerning is the loss of 3-point sniper Bojan Bogdanovic who underwent season-ending wrist surgery. His loss raises questions specifically in terms of floor spacing.
Mike Conley Jr. hasn’t melded as seamlessly into the Jazz system as projected although things were picking up for the veteran guard just prior to the hiatus.
New Orleans Pelicans
When the NBA scheduled this first match to restart the season the thinking much like the opening game of the 2019-20 season was based on the presence of projected generational talent Zion Williamson.
Cut to the present day and the rookie wonder has only just left quarantine after needing to leave the Disney bubble to deal with a personal matter. Although the expectations are Zion will play he’ll only have two days of practice and his minutes will undoubtedly be tracked.
The Pelicans were one of two teams (Thunder) who were unbeaten in the three scrimmage games despite missing their rookie. The Pels are in the group of five chasing the Memphis Grizzlies for the final Western Conference playoff berth with arguably the easiest eight seeding game schedule.
While the rookie draws the attention the Pelicans feature an exceptional core who’ve steadily improved as the season progressed. Jrue Holiday is a solid two-way player who should get some All-Defensive team consideration in spite of the Pelicans’ 20th rank. To wit, they vaulted into the top 10 in February.
Brandon Ingram should be among the top three Most Improved Player Candidates and J.J. Redick provides veteran experience and still has the quickest release from 3-point land.
NBA Betting Trends:
- UTA are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
- NO are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 vs. NBA Northwest.
- Over is 19-7 in the last 26 meetings.
Free Utah Jazz vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
The Pelicans have the easiest schedule in the restart based on combined wins totals of opponents. Half their games are against seeded teams including the Jazz, Clippers, Grizzlies, and Magic.
While the scrimmages aren’t necessarily indicative of the effort teams will bring now that games count toward standings the Pelicans posted a plus +21.7 net differential compared to the Jazz negative -1.3 points during the scrimmages.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Pelicans -2.5
Regardless if Zion plays or not – the Pelicans easily cover the spread.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
