Friday, March 4th, finds the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the fourth and final time this season. Utah is up 2-1 through the previous three games having won on November 27th (127-105) and January 3rd (115-104) while the Pelicans won November 26th (98-97).
Both teams last played on Wednesday with Utah needing overtime to beat the Rockets 132-127 while the Pelicans beat the Kings 125-95 to extend their win streak to three games in a row.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Jazz winning two of the three contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record with 43 wins in 68 matches versus the Pelicans.
Utah Jazz
The Jazz went through a rough stretch losing 11 of 13 games but have flipped the switch winning nine of 10. The last win didn’t come easily as the Jazz took the Rockets for granted allowing them to erase an 18 point deficit and needed overtime to clinch the game.
Although they lost ground on the top seed with that stretch of bad games they remain fourth in a home-court seed holding a 2.5 game edge over the Mavericks and within striking distance of third, two games back of the Grizzlies.
In the victory versus the Rockets, the two stars did the damage with Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert both registering double-doubles. Mitchell led all scorers with 37 points plus 10 assists while Gobert offered 27 points and 17 rebounds.
Bojan Bogdanovic (18), Mike Conley (15), and Jordan Clarkson (14) were the other double-figure contributors.
Utah feasted in the paint scoring 68 points and outrebounded the Rockets 49 to 35. On the negative side, they continue to cough up the ball turning it over 18 times leading to 21 Rockets points.
Jared Butler (ankle) is questionable for Friday.
New Orleans Pelicans
The last 12 games for the Pelicans have been their most successful stretch of the season with the team registering an 8-4 record. Part of that stretch began before the trade deadline.
Since acquiring CJ McCollum the Pel’s are .500 yet he’s quickly acclimated and his leadership on and off the court is palpable.
New Orleans sits 10th a game up on the Blazers and trailing the Lakers by the same margin (1.0 game). With the latter flailing it’s conceivable they’ll surpass one LA team but unlikely have enough time to catch the Clippers who sit in eighth, 6.5 games up on the Pels.
Larry Nance Jr. (knee) is out indefinitely. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season and Williamson (foot) continues to be away from the team as he works to come back from his surgery.
