Monday, October 24th, the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets will compete for the first time this season in a home and home series. They’ll play in Utah on Wednesday and finish the season series in Houston on January 5th.
The Jazz arrives as one of four teams who are still unbeaten after one week of play while the Rockets are one of six winless teams.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Jazz winning three of the four contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record having won 112 matches of the 211 played.
Utah Jazz
Virtually every analyst and pundit placed the Utah Jazz at the head of the tanking pack in preseason predictions. That alarm bell was sounded the minute Danny Ainge traded Rudy Gobert and was bolstered by the ensuing trades of Donovan Mitchell and Bojan Bogdanovic.
The one unknown was if or when Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, and potentially Lauri Markkanen would be dealt. Would Ainge jettison them immediately or wait until the trade deadline to enhance the packages he could get from playoff teams desperate to add depth?

Certainly, the expectation wasn’t for the Jazz to be one of the last four unbeaten teams. Moreover, the fact their opponents are all 2-1 having only lost to the Jazz, and are all projected to be playoff bound speaks to the impressiveness of their accomplishment.
That said, no one is selling stock on the Jazz tank objective not being real or backing off that prediction.
Ainge didn’t trade his best assets to vie for a play-in seed. So Jazz fans should enjoy this short-lived success while it lasts and just hope these three victories don’t end up costing them Wembanyama come lottery time!
Udoka Azubuike (ankle) is questionable for Monday.
Houston Rockets
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Rockets who enter week two winless. They are another of the early bets to openly tank away the season.
Ironically, fewer people would’ve been surprised if Houston were the unbeaten team given the sheer athleticism and youthful talent of their club.
Like the Jazz, they’ve faced some stiff competition to start the season losing to the Hawks, Grizzlies, and Bucks with only the latter occurring via a rout.
The Rockets serve up an entertaining product via Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. who already rank among the league’s top backcourt duos.
Sophomore, Alperen Sengun is averaging a double-double (15.7 points, 10 rebounds), and rookie Jabari Smith Jr. is showcasing precisely why his name was in the mix to be selected first overall.
Bruno Fernando (knee), Jae’Sean Tate (ankle), Eric Gordon (groin), and TyTy Washington Jr. (knee) are all questionable to play Monday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 6-13-1 ATS in their last 20 games overall.
- The Rockets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss.
- Under is 6-0 in Utah’s last 6 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
- Over is 6-0 in the Rockets’ last 6 home games.
- Jazz are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Houston.
Utah Jazz vs Houston Rockets NBA Analysis:
As entertaining as the Rockets are they are abysmal defensively ranking dead last (120.8). While they tank away the season Stephen Silas’ challenge will be to get his youngsters to buy into that end of the court.
And perhaps that unlocks the easy answer as to why the Jazz is 3-0… at the heart of their identity and culture is DEFENSE so those principles don’t simply disappear just because their best defender is gone.
Having said all that – it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Rockets are the team who ends the streak. It might be poetic justice even, especially if one win ends up being the difference in the lottery bingo balls at season end.
