Sunday, January 23rd, finds the Utah Jazz playing the Golden State Warriors for the second time. The Warriors won on the first meeting 123-116.
Both clubs played Friday with the Warriors beating Houston 105-103 while the Jazz beat Detroit 111-101.
Both teams have struggled since the calendar switched to 2022. Prior to that point the Dubs were 27-7 and Utah was 26-9 but in 2022 they are 6-6 and 4-7 respectively.
Utah Jazz
While Rudy Gobert was out the Jazz went 1-4 and since his return, are 2-2 so they haven’t fixed completely what is ailing them. Granted, Donovan Mitchell missed the Rockets match.
Prior to the recent struggles, the Jazz was considered one of the deepest teams but perhaps the recent issues highlight the need to upgrade the bench.
Part of the issue is most of the reserves don’t get much run so being thrown into situations where they have to impact winning (not just protect leads) puts pressure on those individuals who perhaps aren’t as comfortable in that role.
It also points to the fact Joe Ingles isn’t as productive as he once was. Again, injuries are playing a factor since Rudy Gay and Hassan Whiteside are top Jazz reserves but both have missed time due to injury/protocols.’
Bojan Bogdanovic (finger) is probable, Trent Forrest (hip), Hassan Whiteside (quarantine), and Gobert (ankle) are all questionable. Donovan Mitchell (concussion) is out.
Golden State Warriors
The loss to the severely undermanned Pacers was the perfect film study for coaches around the league to use as a training tool on why you can never take another team for granted. It’s not typical for a Warriors team to get caught in a trap game but that’s precisely what happened.
As noted in recent previews, the Warriors’ recent regression punctuate how essential Draymond Green is to both the offense and defensive schemes.
Flashback to 2016 when Green served a one-game suspension in the Finals and it makes a lot more sense now how the Cavaliers got back in that series! The second factor is the re-integration of Klay Thompson. While Curry, Green, Andre Iguodala, and Kevon Looney played with Thompson the majority of the roster hadn’t.
Those Dubs need to develop chemistry with Klay and adapt to their re-defined role which might include fewer touches and without Green, it compounds the learning curve.
Draymond Green (calf) and James Wiseman (knee) remain out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The Warriors are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Utah’s last 5 games on the road.
Free Utah Jazz vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
Which of these teams will show up Sunday? The Warriors squad who spanked the Bulls or the one who lost to the Pacers and Wolves. Similarly, the Jazz squad who routed the Nuggets or the one who got embarrassed by the Pistons and Rockets?
With Green out and Gobert expected to play it favors the Jazz – – BUT I can’t shake a few things that have me leaning the other way…
In prior seasons the Jazz would pack the paint and let teams fire away from the perimeter but this season they rank eighth in perimeter defense (34.1%) while the Warriors rank fourth (32.9%).
The x-factors are points scored off turnovers (POT), fast-break scoring (FB), and scoring in the paint (PIP). The Dubs rank fifth in both POT (18.4) and FB (14.9) while Utah ranks 24th (17.0) and 14th (11.8) in defense of those areas. Conversely, the Jazz ranks sixth in PIP (48.7) scoring but the Dubs rank fourth in PIP defense (42.1).
Granted without Green it impacts the Warriors’ defensive prowess but Utah will have to stop the Splash Brothers, fast-break scoring, drives to the paint, and not turn over the ball. That’s a lot to contend with and Gobert can’t be everywhere at once.
The oddsmakers are equally flummoxed based on the single point spread — meaning it’s a coin toss. I’m going with the above intel and my gut to take the Warriors.
