A mid-afternoon Saturday match features a potential first-round playoff series of the Utah Jazz versus the Denver Nuggets.
The Jazz trail the Nuggets by two games in the loss column, the Rockets by half a game and hold a half-game edge over the Thunder. Both the Rockets and Thunder hold the tiebreaker over Utah.
The Nuggets trail the Clippers by 1.5 games with their loss to LA possibly cementing their ability to move up to second. That might have been a calculated move to avoid the Mavericks and play one of the trio of teams in the middle (Jazz, Rockets, Thunder) who’ll finish in sixth.
Utah Jazz
The Jazz is 2-3 in their seeding games with wins against Pelicans and Grizzlies and losses to the Thunder, Lakers, and Spurs. The latter game a result of several core players missing the match due to injury or rest.
Specifically, star Donovan Mitchell was out due to a left peroneal strain, Mike Conley right knee soreness, and Royce O’Neale for right calf soreness while Rudy Gobert sat for rest.
The decision to rest Gobert may come back to haunt Quin Snyder. Both the Rockets and Thunder hold the tiebreak versus Utah and falling to sixth would likely mean a tough contest versus the Nuggets.
In the loss, five Jazz players scored in double-figures with Jordan Clarkson (24) leading the way. Tony Bradley delivered a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds while Emmanuel Mudiay (14), Miye Oni (14) and Joe Ingles (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
Several Jazz players are listed as questionable again including Mitchell (leg), Conley (knee), Juwan Morgan (knee), and O’Neal.
Denver Nuggets
Considering the Nuggets haven’t had their starting guards available in the seeding games their 2-2 record isn’t that concerning. They’ve beaten the Thunder in overtime and the Spurs while losing to the Heat and Blazers.
While Jamal Murray (hamstring), Gary Harris (hip), and Will Barton (knee) have yet to play the Nuggets youngsters Michael Porter Jr. and Bol Bol have been revelations for Denver.
How much the two youngsters will play once the playoffs start is the question. It’s a good problem for head coach Mike Malone to have as this situation is allowing MPJ and Bol to gain experience while simultaneously allowing his guards time to heal.
In the loss to the Blazers MPG delivered a double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead his team. Torrey Craig, Mason Plumlee, and P.J. Dozier all scored 13 points while Jerami Grant (18) and Monte Morris (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Troy Daniels (hip) and the trio of guards are all questionable to play Saturday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- UTA are 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
- Home team is 12-2 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
- Under is 21-5 in the last 26 meetings.
Free Utah Jazz vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:
While this could be a first-round playoff preview it’s doubtful we’ll see many of the core players or either coach tip their hand on how they’d approach a series.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: bet the over
Malone will be on his squad after giving up 125 points to the Spurs while the Jazz hasn’t looked like contenders even when their stars play so I’m leaning in favor of the Nuggets.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
