Saturday, April 16th the fifth-place Utah Jazz and fourth place Dallas Mavericks open their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series and kick off the 2022 NBA playoffs.
The clubs split the season series with Utah winning 120-116 on December 25th and 114-109 on February 25th while Dallas won 111-103 on March 7th and 114-100 on March 27th.
Utah holds the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 106 of their 183 regular-season matches but the Mavericks possess the postseason edge (6-3) having won two prior first-round series in 1986 (3-1) and 2001 (3-2)

Prior to this season even tipping off the focus in Utah was all about what the team would do once they reached this stage.
This is the sixth consecutive postseason trip for head coach Quin Snyder and Rudy Gobert while Donovan Mitchell makes his fifth consecutive trip. In those series, the Jazz has two first-round exits and three semi-final exits.
Despite holding the best record in the West last season they struggled in the second round. Part of their woes can be tied to untimely injuries but the overriding factor has always been the question of whether this team is tough enough or united enough.
Whether the ‘soft’ tag is fair this Jazz crew needs to change the narrative and once again find themselves in a series missing their top player. In 2021 that resulted in Utah losing four in a row to the Clippers without Kawhi Leonard after holding a 2-0 lead.
With Dallas not having Luka Doncic, the Jazz has to take advantage and win every game the Mavs star is out.
Dallas Mavericks
For anyone questioning why head coaches tend to rest their best players in the final regular-season game what happened to Luka Doncic is the perfect example of why.
Sure the Mavs could’ve potentially climbed up to the third seed which truthfully was coveted to avoid facing the Suns until the Conference Finals. This was a lesson to not look too far ahead as Doncic’s strained calf could keep him out one game or the entire series.
Dallas played near .500 ball without their superstar (8-9) although it’s worth noting all of those losses occurred before the addition of Spencer Dinwiddie.
Like the Jazz, this Mavericks team has struggled in recent years albeit without the same depth but are still looking to win a playoff series in the Luka era.
Maxi Kleber (ankle) was upgraded to probable, Frank Ntilikina (illness) is questionable, and Luka Doncic (calf) is out Saturday. Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is out indefinitely.

Utah has to take advantage of Doncic being out and at a minimum win one of these first two games in Dallas which I think they accomplish in this contest but the Mavs keep it closer than the spread.
