2019-2020 NBA Previews – Jazz Odds
Looking for 2019 Utah Jazz Predictions? This summer witnessed a mass exodus of top talents from their former teams between trades and free agent signings. And while the league focused on superstars heading to LA and New York the team who arguably did the best job of filling rosters gaps was the Utah Jazz.
Specifically, the addition of Mike Conley to pair with rising talent Donovan Mitchell means the Jazz now has one of the most talented and versatile backcourts in the association.

Utah Jazz Strengths:
Targeted additions:
After the Ricky Rubio experiment failed the Jazz focused on adding a better compliment to Donovan Mitchell. The rumor was Utah was interested in obtaining Mike Conley last season before the trade deadline but the deal never transpired. After another early playoff exit, the Jazz recommitted to landing Conley this summer and were successful in their pursuit.
Although Conley may not be the flashiest point guard he is the perfect fit to pair with Mitchell. One of the many overlooked qualities Conley brings to Utah is the ability to adjust pace on the fly and efficient perimeter shooting.

Rubio was never adept from the perimeter which put extra pressure on Mitchell who’ll immediately benefit by being able to drive more frequently knowing Conley will offer an outside target he can hit if the opposition closes the lanes.
While the Jazz was among the top rebounding teams (8th) they fell off a cliff when the reserves (26th) came into the game. The additions of Jeff Green and Ed Davis addresses this issue.
Improved Perimeter Shooting:
Utah ranked in the top 10 for perimeter efficiency and makes in the regular season. Unfortunately, they plummeted to dead last in the playoffs when teams were able to game plan for their offense. This highlighted the very real need to add more snipers.
Bojan Bogdanovic immediately addresses this need with his 42.5 percent efficiency. Conley (36.4%) is also a quality 3-point sniper who should experience an uptick in his efficiency now that he’s on a deeper, more talented squad. Overall the team should experience better shot opportunities with more capable shooters to defer to.
Defense:
It all starts with perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate, Rudy Gobert who holds down last season’s second-ranked defensive squad. As frightening as it might be for the rest of the league, the player additions Utah made this summer may result in an even more daunting defense.
Utah Jazz Weaknesses:
Roster turnover:
After years of minor tweaks, the Jazz took a different approach this offseason and switched out half the roster. With the trio of Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, and Joe Ingles forming the future core General Manager, Dennis Lindsey had a specific objective of adding talented depth to the gaps remaining.

Each addition was arguably an upgrade (although the loss of Derrick Favors will hurt) which should equate to improvement.
The problem is that so much change requires time to gain natural chemistry which comes with familiarity and constancy. Unfortunately, time waits for no one which means initially the Jazz will have to navigate the growing pains. In the first 20 games of the schedule, the Jazz will face 11 playoff participants from this past year along with contests versus an improved Lakers club along with two games each against the rising Kings and Timberwolves squads.
Mitchell’s shooting efficiency:
This may be a moot point with the addition of Conley and Bogdanovic but during the playoffs with a defense tailored to shut him down his shooting was atrocious.
Utah Jazz Betting Prediction: 55-27
Oddsmakers predict an over/under of 54.5 wins. Given the upgrades the Jazz made combined with their home court advantage gaining five more victories should be easily obtained.
Parity has never been greater in the NBA and with the uncertainty of true frontrunners, the Jazz is poised to be one of the top title contenders.
