Through five games the Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards have yet to win on the opponent’s court. What changes in this match is if the Raptors can do that they’ll clinch the series.
DeMar DeRozan came out and delivered early for the Raptors scoring 20 points in the first half. In spite of this effort however, the Wizards took the one point lead into the locker rooms at the half.
While DeRozan and Kyle Lowry (double-double: 17 points/10 rebounds) led the way it was the ‘others’ who raised their play to capture the victory.
In particular guard Delon Wright was anything but hesitant mixing his pesky defense with timely scoring. Wright’s 18 points featured 11 in the final frame where the helped pull the Raptors into a comfortable lead.
Arguably, Jonas Valanciunas was the x-factor in the win. JV recorded a double-double, with his greatest contribution in the fourth quarter.
This is noteworthy because it was the first time JV played in the final frame of the series. JV scored 6 of his 14 points, grabbed 7 of his 13 rebounds and had a huge steal on John Wall in this frame.
Once again Fred VanVleet didn’t play, but reports out of Toronto have him closer to a return as he progresses in the healing process of his injured shoulder.
To say the Washington Wizards are a team of trends would be putting too fine a point on the obvious. The Wizards loss last night was their ninth consecutive road loss. Conversely, the Wizards have won eight in a row at home.
John Wall has been other worldly in the series playing well regardless of what court he’s playing on. Game 5 he lead the way with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Getting his teammates to raise their games hasn’t been as simple.
That said, Game 5 was debatably the best road effort of the team as a whole. Bradley Beal scored 20, Marcin Gortat produced a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Kelly Oubre was active on both sides of the hardwood.
The spotlight is on Otto Porter Jr. who historically has been a thorn in DeRozan’s side. But OPJ is nursing a sore leg (bone bruise) which is affecting his range of motion. Porter is listed as questionable, but will likely play unless the injury is worse than reported.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Raptors are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 head to head meetings
- Raptors are 6-4 in last 10 head to head contests
- Over Under is 5-5 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
Although I seldom move away from trends two factors have me leaning in that direction. First, the uncertain health of Porter is a factor and second VanVleet is truly day to day.
The latter’s presence would bring back the true x-factor of the bench mob and Raptors clutch lineup.
