Wednesday, March 9th, the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs play for the second and final time this season. The Raptors won the initial match 129-104 in Toronto on January 4th.
Toronto is coming off a 96-104 loss on Sunday in Cleveland while the Spurs played Monday defeating the Lakers 117-110.
Last season the clubs played twice with the teams splitting the games each winning at home (albeit the Raptors were in Tampa Bay last season). The Spurs hold the all-time record with 35 wins in 51 matches versus the Raptors.
Toronto Raptors
Last week was tough for the Raptors having to make up postponed matches. That resulted in the team playing seven games in 10 days featuring three consecutive back-to-back sets.
Although the team went 2-4 the two victories were the most essential as they came versus the Nets which was the team directly behind them at the time.
Aside from dealing with fatigue, the main lesson learned last week in the losses was just how little depth the Raptors have and how vital Fred VanVleet is to the offense and OG Anunoby is to the defense.
On the positive side of the equation, the play of Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam reinforced their value to the club and the need to add more shooting since Gary Trent Jr.’s untimely shooting slump likely cost them the game in Cleveland.
Barnes proved his versatility yet again changing roles this time tackling the role of point guard as he posted a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds that could easily have been a triple-double if his teammates had hit more shots.
Instead, he dished six dimes with no turnovers adding three steals to the mix. Evan Mobley (20 points, 17 rebounds, 3 blocks) was also spectacular giving hints of what will be great battles in the future between the two youngsters.
The good news for Toronto is Fred VanVleet is listed as probable to play in San Antonio after the young vet sat five games due to a sore knee.
Anunoby (finger) and Malachi Flynn (hamstring) are out indefinitely.
San Antonio Spurs
Head coach Gregg Popovich finally got that elusive win that tied him with Don Nelson for most regular-season wins in NBA history.
San Antonio beat the Lakers to capture the win ending a four-game losing streak. All five starters scored in double-figures with Dejounte Murray registering a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds along with eight assists, three steals, and a block.
Jakob Poeltl and Josh Richardson each scored 18 while Keldon Johnson and Doug McDermott scored 13 and 11 respectively.
Keita Bates-Diop (back), Lonnie Walker IV (illness), and Devin Vassell (groin) are all questionable.

These teams always have competitive games and it’s a bit of a coin toss as the slim one-point spread offers but I think getting VanVleet back should bolster the Raptors offense. That said, Toronto always seems to be in these record-setting games so I’m taking the Spurs.
