Wednesday, November 2nd, the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs play for the first of two games this season. The Raptors will host the second game on February 8th.
Toronto is coming off an absolute blow-out of the Hawks on Monday (139-109) while the Spurs last played Sunday winning a chippy (questionably called) affair versus the Timberwolves 107-98.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Raptors winning both contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 35 wins in 52 matches versus the Raptors.
Toronto Raptors
Despite their 139 point outburst versus the Hawks the Raptors issues are finding easy points. One way they do that is by forcing turnovers and winning the glass battle.
They allow opponents the fewest offensive rebounds (7.3), plus lead the league in steals and fast break scoring.

If you only look at opponent field goal (47.2%) and perimeter (37.0) shooting percentages which rank 20th and 22nd respectively it might seem like Toronto is struggling defensively when in fact that’s their strength.
A more accurate depiction of that fact is they hold opponents to 106.6 points per 100 possessions which ranks 4th overall and they are the best at limiting shots allowing only 80.1 per 100 possessions which tops the league with only four other teams holding opponents under 85 per game.
Keep in mind the Raptors have played a heinous starting schedule chock full of playoff bound teams. So the points allowed and the fact they allow the fewest field goals attempted speaks to their defensive strength.
The 139 points versus the Hawks was an outlier as their statistics prove… Toronto scores 109.7 points per 100 possessions and shoots 45.1% from the field (both ranked 24th) although their perimeter efficiency is strong as they shoot 38.1% ranking 8th.
If you missed the game against the Hawks a quick scan of the box score punctuates the points above. Toronto was +12 steals, +5 blocks, a staggering +33 on the fast break, +12 points in the paint with 11 fewer turnovers leading to 24-7 scoring advantage.
Fred VanVleet (back) and Otto Porter Jr (personal) are questionable for Wednesday.
San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio has been on fire to start the season causing analysts fits after some suggested they would be an uninteresting team and possibly have the fewest wins ever.
The Spurs allow 118.6 points per 100 possessions ranking 25th and opponents are shooting 48.5 percent from the field (27th) and 34.7 percent from the perimeter (16th).
In contrast, San Antonio thrives offensively scoring 118.0 points per 100 possessions ranking fifth best while shooting 46.8 percent from the field (tied 15th) and 39.4 percent from deep ranking in a tie for fifth best.
Devin Vassell (knee), Josh Richardson (back), Isaiah Roby (illness), Jeremy Sochan (illness) and Blake Wesley (knee) are all questionable for Wednesday.

Free Toronto Raptors vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Analysis:
Toronto are top-five in some key defensive categories such as limiting opponents on points off turnovers (5th), second chance points (2nd), fast break scoring (4th) and points in the paint (tied 5th).
With their schedule finally including some middle and lower tier teams don’t be surprised if they end up ranking top three defense.
The Spurs won’t continue winning like they are but they’ve been an early season Cinderella squad with this match offering their toughest test to date. The opening line favored the Spurs and has shifted dramatically in favor of Toronto.
While I agree the Raptors should be favored the spread feels influenced by Monday’s score and it’s a tad high given how the Raptors typically struggle to put points on the board – – albeit the Spurs defense isn’t their strong suit.
Still Pops teams typically give the Raptors all they handle so take the Spurs and points but Toronto for the win.
