Friday, March 11th the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns meet for the second and final time this season. Phoenix won the first match in 99-95 on January 11th.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Raptors beating the Spurs 119-104 and the Suns beating the Heat 111-90.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Suns winning both contests. The Suns hold the all-time record with 32 wins in 50 matches versus the Suns.
Toronto Raptors
Proving just how valuable Fred VanVleet is to the Raptors his return to the court paid immediate dividends for Toronto who finally looked like they had an offense.
Although they are still missing OG Anunoby and his two-way impact, they were a much closer facsimile of the team who were clicking prior to the All-Star break.
VanVleet led the Raptors with 26 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals while drilling seven 3-pointers. The latter part of that equation allowed better floor spacing for Toronto and resulted in everyone performing much better offensively.
Rookie Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam each scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Gary Trent Jr. still struggled with his shot but was more effective overall scoring 17 while Precious Achiuwa offered 13 off the bench including three 3-pointers.
VanVleet also impacts the defense which was humming, particularly in the second half.
Toronto excelled in the typical areas grabbing 13 offensive boards (to 7), forcing 14 turnovers that led to 23 points (compared to 10 for six points) while winning both the paint (50 to 46) and fast-break scoring battles (14 to 9).
Anunoby (finger) remains out indefinitely as does Malachi Flynn (hamstring).
Phoenix Suns
With the victory in Miami, the Suns became the first team to cement their playoff tickets and with no pressure on them losing the top seed they’ll now focus on achieving the best record in franchise history which they can do by going 10-6.
Devin Booker returned from quarantine and delivered in an impressive victory versus the Heat with three Suns posting double-doubles and another two missing out by a single digit from making it an unprecedented five players.
In fact, Booker flirted with a triple-double with 23 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Deandre Ayton (19 points, 10 rebounds), Cameron Payne (11 points, 10 assists), and JaVale McGee (11 points, 15 rebounds) were the dub-dub trio.
Mikal Bridges was the other player who came close with 21 points and nine rebounds while Jae Crowder chipped in 11 points.
Cam Johnson (quad) is questionable for Friday. Chris Paul (thumb), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Toronto is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Phoenix is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Toronto’s last 5 games.
- Phoenix is 16-4 SU in their last 20 games.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Phoenix is 4-3 in their last seven matches with Booker playing in two of the three losses and the common denominator of those defeats being teams with quality defense and/or young athletic rosters (Pelicans, Jazz, Bucks).
In the first meeting, Toronto was up 90-89 with 1:02 remaining but Chris Paul took over with an assist, 2-point bucket, and two free throws (and of course the incident with Booker/Raptor mascot incident). Also of note, Anunoby scored 25 in that match and Trent Jr. didn’t play.
I’m teetering on who takes this match and feel it’s more of a coin toss than the 5.5 spread so I’m tentatively taking the Suns to win but the Raptors to keep it closer than 5.5 points.
