Game 5 of the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers series tips off Monday, April 25th. Philly will be seeking the gentleman’s sweep after the Raptors staved off elimination on Saturday via a 110-102 win.
The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 61 of their 103 regular-season matches. This is the third time the franchises are meeting in the postseason with both prior times going the distance.
Toronto Raptors
Many questioned Toronto selecting Scottie Barnes over Jalen Suggs in the 2021 draft but Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster proved their mettle when the number four pick was awarded the 2022 Rookie of the Year from a deep talented class.
Better still, Barnes returned from a two-game absence offering 11 rebounds, six points, and two assists in 26 minutes of action. That was the good — the bad was Fred VanVleet exiting in the second quarter after suffering a hip injury. Both are questionable for Monday.
That meant the majority of the offensive load fell on Pascal Siakam who delivered with a playoff career-high of 34 points plus eight rebounds, five assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Gary Trent Jr. scored 24 while Thad Young was an x-factor providing 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block.
The Raptors played more to their identity back home although getting Trent and Barnes back was a factor In Game 4 that was evidenced via an advantage on the glass (46 to 41), offensive boards (13 to 6), paint points (42 to 38), and fast-break scoring (21 to 10).
Another key was the Raptors forced 16 turnovers converting them to 22 points while Philly caused 11 Toronto turnovers but scored only three points off those miscues.
Philadelphia 76ers
For the first time in the series the Raptors received the whistle benefit and Joel Embiid wasn’t happy about it. He’s taken 43 free throws in the series and got to the line nine times Saturday.
Game 4 was the first time in the series Embiid didn’t register a double-double but offered 21 points (7 of 16), eight rebounds, and three assists.
Sunday the Sixers confirmed Embiid has a torn ligament in his right thumb but he’ll wait until the offseason to have surgery. The big man noted rebounding is when he feels the most pain (likely because his hand gets hit).
James Harden hasn’t taken much of the scoring load off Embiid shooting 21 of 56 (37.5%) in the series with 33.7% of his points coming at the free-throw line.
Both stars are having turnover issues since the opener (1 turnover by Harden). Embiid who is getting double-teamed more frequently has 15 turnovers in the last three games (4, 6, 5) while Harden has 12 (5, 3, 4).
Tyrese Maxey scored 38 in the opener but has dropped off in each game (23, 19, 11). Similarly, Tobias Harris had his highest-scoring game in the opener (26) but has three double-doubles since albeit with fewer points (20 – 11- 15), and got banged up at the end of Game 4.
Charles Bassey (shoulder) is questionable for Monday.

Free Toronto Raptors vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
This series is much closer than the 3-1 edge Philly holds including an overtime buzzer-beater away from being tied 2-2. Nick Nurse relies heavily on his top seven or eight players so Trent ailing for the first two games and Barnes missing the middle two factored.
Diving deeper, Embiid has been good, not great, albeit with that injured thumb. Harden has provided playmaking but struggled to score and has become a target for Toronto to attack on offense.
The x-factors are Maxey and Harris but as per above, they’ve progressively regressed but performed better on their home court. The reality is the Raptors have no extra pressure to win but if they do steal this match the pressure will exponentially increase specifically on Harden, Rivers, and Daryl Morey.
Rivers holds the distinction of losing three different series when his team held a 3-1 advantage and is already in the hot seat with rumors Harden wants Mike D’Antoni to be the coach.
Sunday, in three of the four matches the officials let the teams play, and that included similarly defensive-minded squads like the Heat and Bucks. So, barring free throws being part of the narrative this should be a closer game than the spread 7.5 spread.
