Sunday, March 20th, the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers play for the third of four meetings this season. Each team has a win with Toronto winning 115-109 on November 11th while Philly won 114-109 on December 28th. Toronto will host the final meeting on April 7th
Both teams last played on Friday with the Raptors losing 123-128 in overtime while the 76ers beat the Mavericks 111-101.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers taking two of the three contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 59 of their 101 matches.
Toronto Raptors
Coaches and analysts talk about how hard games are in the first match back from a lengthy road trip (particularly opposite coast). This past Raptors game was a perfect example of why and how easy it is to lose those contests.
It was a double shot for Toronto who coughed up the ball in the final 10 seconds to allow a hail Mary Russell Westbrook 3-pointer to tie the game (and no that’s not an oxymoron) and then lost the match in overtime. The same Lakers team they easily beat on Monday.
The loss was made all the more bitter as the Cavaliers channeled the Lakers’ comeback creating one of their own to defeat the Nuggets and put a game between themselves and Toronto once again.
Scottie Barnes was spectacular offering a double-double of 31 points and 17 rebounds (both career highs), plus six assists. Gary Trent Jr. scored 23, Fred VanVleet offered 20 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and four steals.
Siakam came up just shy of 20 points to end his eight-game run of hitting that mark with 17 points, six rebounds, and seven assists while Precious Achiuwa offered 18 points.
In other words, they weren’t having an issue scoring – it was the defensive intensity that wasn’t on hand and perhaps the point of the first game back being tough. The legs and mind aren’t as sharp as necessary.
OG Anunoby (finger) and Malachi Flynn (hamstring) remain out indefinitely.
Philadelphia 76ers
The duo of James Harden and Joel Embiid are 8-2 since joining forces with the two losses occurring against the Net and the Nuggets. Both teams feature a top superstar who has length.
So with Luka Doncic in town and their much-touted defense it was a positive sign for Philly to hold them to 101 points and limit Doncic to 17 points.
Embiid delivered 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists, five steals, and a block. Harden scored a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The trio of Tobias Harris (14), Georges Niang (12), and Matisse Thybulle (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Joel Embiid (back) is questionable for Sunday.

Both teams have a legitimate shot to move up the ladder with the 76ers eyeing the top ladder rung (trailing the Heat by 3.0 games) while the Raptors covet the sixth seed to avoid the play-in tournament, but trail the Cavaliers by 1.5 games.
Embiid will be a problem for Toronto who doesn’t have a 7′ player (nor 6’11 or 6’10 for that matter) but with news, he’s nursing a bad back will Philly risk playing him? Clearly, if he’s out the Raptors have the advantage. Toronto is particularly strong in bounce-back matches when they feel they should’ve won.
If he does play expect Nick Nurse to employ a similar defensive scheme to what they ran on Nikola Jokic, fronting him to keep the ball out of his hand.
Ultimately whether Embiid plays likely determines who wins and since he’s driven to play as many games as possible I’d bank on him being on the court but I like a closer game than the spread predicts so I’ll take the points.
