Friday, November 11th, finds the Toronto Raptors facing the OKC Thunder for the first time this season. Toronto will host the second contest on March 16 8th.
Both teams last played Wednesday with the Raptors defeating the Rockets 116-109 while OKC battled the Bucks into double overtime finally succumbing 132-136.
Last season the clubs played twice each winning on the road. The Thunder holds the all-time record with 31 wins in 51 matches versus the Raptors.
Toronto Raptors
Being without the services of Pascal Siakam is a big loss for the Raptors given he’s in that rare Antetokounmpo, Jokic territory as the team’s top point producer (24.8), rebounder (9.3), and dime disher (7.7).
Fortunately, the Raptors have Fred VanVleet and OG Anunoby who are picking up the slack plus Scottie Barnes to help in all three key areas. That trio was a factor in the victory versus the Rockets.
.VanVleet offered 32 points, three rebounds, four assists, four steals, and hit seven 3-pointers. Anunoby registered a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds plus three steals while Barnes offered 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Nick Nurse has one rule which is you HAVE to play defense — as long as the player is doing that (and effectively) they have the green light to initiate the offense with any of the five bringing the ball up the court.
Toronto generates so much of their offense off that aggressive defense via turnovers, deflections, and rebounds.
Toronto averages 112.3 points per game which rank right in the middle of the league at 15th. From an efficiency perspective, the Raps shoot 45.1% from the field tying them with the Knicks for 23rd and shoot 36.1% from the perimeter which ranks 14th.
On the defensive side of the court, the Raptors hold opponents to 106.8 points per game which ranks fourth overall. Toronto’s opponents shoot 46.7 percent from the field (tied for 18th) and 35 percent from deep which is tied for 12th.
Precious Achiuwa left the game Wednesday in a walking boot and will be out for approximately two weeks. Justin Champagnie (back) and Khem Birch as questionable Friday. Pascal Siakam will miss a minimum of two weeks with a groin injury.
OKC Thunder
Through the early season, there is a solid argument for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to win Most Improved Player if he keeps up his production. Ahh, but that’s the catch-22 because OKC may want to shut him down in order to obtain a prime draft lottery position.
On defense, the Thunder allow 114 points per game ranking 16th. Opponents are shooting 46.1 percent from the field (tied 12th).
The Thunder keeps sliding in down the ladder in perimeter efficiency with the schedule serving up some of the better 3-point shooting opponents. They once were top 10 in this category but have slipped to a tie for 18th allowing 35.8% percent.
OKC is struggling on the offensive side of the floor scoring 111.7 per game which ranks 17th overall. OKC shoots 44.2 percent from the field which ranks 27th and 30.5 percent from deep which only ranks ahead of the Lakers.
Darius Bazley left the last match with an ankle injury and is questionable for Friday. Chet Holmgren (foot) is out for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Toronto is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
- OKC is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Toronto’s last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of OKC’s last 7 games.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. OKC Thunder NBA Prediction:
Canadians SGA and Lu Dort have made this a great rivalry in recent seasons and while the Raptors are favored it’s not a given especially considering where the team’s strengths lie.
Toronto and OKC rank first and second in steals and scoring off turnovers while Toronto also ranks first in fast break scoring and the Thunder score the second most in the paint.
Adding complexity to the mix is the Thunder allow the second-fewest opponent points off turnovers (Raptors rank fourth) and third-fewest fast break points while the Raptors offer the sixth-fewest points in the paint and protect the ball (second fewest turnovers).
The game could come down to the glass. Toronto fares better on the boards ranking seventh in total and defensive rebound percent and fifth for offensive rebound percent (OKC ranks 28th, 21st and 17th).
Every time the Raptors were supposed to “easily” beat the Thunder they’ve either lost or been pushed in clutch time so I’m taking the points and going with the Raps to win given the few extra advantages but won’t be shocked if OKC steals the game.
