Wednesday, February 16th, the Toronto Raptors and Minnesota Timberwolves play for the first of two meetings this season. Toronto will host the second game on March 30th.
The Raptors last played Monday and got pounded 90-120 by the Pelicans while the Wolves are playing a back-to-back set battling the Hornets in a match they won 129-120 in overtime on Tuesday.
Last season, the squads met twice splitting the series with each team winning on the road. The Jazz holds the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 34 of their 50 matches.
Toronto Raptors
It was inevitable that playing the starters for so many minutes was going to catch up to Nick Nurse and the players. That’s not to take away from the Pelicans who have hit a groove and are trending up.
Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby rank first, second and fourth in minutes played per match while Scottie Barnes and Gary Trent Jr. rank 18th and 22nd.
Suffice to say no team will welcome some time off more than the Raptors whose eight-game winning streak ended with two losses in a row.
As for VanVleet and Barnes, after this match, they’ll head to Cleveland to participate in All-Star weekend. VanVleet is on Team LeBron in the All-Star game and will participate in the MTN DEW 3-point contest.
Barnes is part of Team Payton in the Clorox Rising Stars and joins Cade Cunningham and Josh Giddey as part of the rookie team in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge who face the Antetokounmpo Brothers and a trio of Cavaliers (Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen).
What Barnes is doing deserves recognition as we hear every season about the rookie wall, so the fact he’s in the top 20 minutes played is a testament to how special he is. Precious Achiuwa is also in the Rising Stars game on Team Isiah (Thomas).
Fred VanVleet is nursing a sore groin and knocked knees in the match Monday and given the blow-out, Nick Nurse sat the man who leads the league in minutes. He’s listed as questionable to play Wednesday.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Like the VanVleet and Barnes, two Wolves will participate in the events this weekend. Karl-Anthony Towns is part of team Durant while Anthony Edwards was the top selection in the Clorox Rising Stars with Isiah Thomas the captain who made the selection.
Hopefully, Edwards will be able to participate as he was forced to leave the game Tuesday after spraining his ankle missing the second half and overtime frames.
Unlike Toronto, the Wolves are one of the teams who likely wish the break was later given they’ve won 11 of their last 16 matches. On the other hand, Minnesota’s schedule gets tougher down the stretch.
They’ll play 13 teams currently seeded eighth or higher with four of those right after the break and 10 teams seeded ninth or lower.
Anthony Edwards left the last game after tweaking his ankle while McKinley Wright IV is nursing an elbow injury with both questionable to play Wednesday in the Wolves final game prior to the All-Star Break.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Wolves are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Raptors are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Minnesota’s last 5 games.
- Toronto is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games this season.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Toronto needs the break arguably more than any other team, particularly the starters. They’ll need to stay physically and mentally invested for one more game.
Minny enters with the rest disadvantage and while they won on Tuesday they needed overtime and could be without Edwards giving the Raptors an edge.
That the oddsmakers put a one-point spread and offered no betting total tells you this match is a coin flip. Toronto looks gassed but I suspect they’ll summon the required effort to get back in the win column and enter the break on a positive.
