The second and fourth seeds of the Eastern Conference meet as the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat tip-off in an early matinee. Both clubs enter having won their initial ‘seeding’ game on Saturday.
The Raptors took down the Lakers in a defensive battle while the Heat annihilated the shorthanded Nuggets en route to an easy victory.
This is the third meeting between the clubs this season with the Heat winning both while the Raptors swept the Heat the season prior.
If there was any doubt the Raptors were capable of repeating as champions the defensive display they put on Saturday night to take down the Lakers should’ve answered that question.
Kyle Lowry set the tone for his squad as he looks to be in championship form already. The Philadelphia native was masterful hitting timely 3-pointers, drawing charges, and grabbing 14 rebounds to go along with a game-high 33 points for his double-double.
OG Anunoby had the tough defensive assignment of guarding LeBron James but kept the King busy on the offensive end with a highly efficient 23 points shooting 8 of 9 from the field including hitting all three 3-point attempts.
The ascendence of Anunoby will offer Pascal Siakam a secondary wing to help with scoring in the playoffs and in essence he’ll play the role Siakam played to Kawhi Leonard in last season’s title run.
Fred VanVleet delivered a double-double of 13 points and 11 assists while Siakam scored 15 and grabbed nine rebounds.
While many analysts point to the talented 76ers squad as a dark horse in the East the team fans shouldn’t sleep on is the Miami Heat who have a great mix of veterans and young talent.
In their victory over the Nuggets, the Heat demonstrated their depth and adaptability. Albeit, they faced a Denver team relegated to using extra length given the lack of available guards and wings.
The Heat leaders Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo each scored 22 points while Kelly Olynyk who struggled early scored all his 20 points in the fourth quarter.
The Heat took advantage of frees and threes scoring 32 (of 37 attempts) at the line and nailing 44.8 percent of their 3-point attempts.
Others who delivered double-figure scoring were Duncan Robinson (17), Kendrick Nunn (11), and Goran Dragic (13).
NBA Betting Trends:
- Raptors are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
- Over is 10-3 in the Heat last 13 overall.
- Over is 7-2 in Miami’s last 9 vs. Eastern Conference.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
The Raptors bench was outscored 50-15 by the Lakers. With games occurring every other day they’ll need to step up so the core doesn’t get overtaxed as they work to get into condition.
Miami had an easier first game taking down the shorthanded Nuggets and should be more rested overall.
The other key will be the perimeter as the Heat have the best 3-point efficiency and the Raptors are fifth. They are also two of the top perimeter defenders with Toronto first and Miami fifth.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Heat +2.5
The Raptors and Heat have the two hardest eight-seeded game schedule of the 22 teams in the bubble. Toronto holds a 3.5 edge over the Celtics while the Heat is two games behind Boston which means both clubs have a vested interest in winning to secure seeding.
These squads typically have physical matches so this one could come down to the wire.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
