Monday, October 24th, the Toronto Raptors will complete a two game set versus the Miami Heat. The last match got extremely chippy including ejections.
Miami got out to a 24-point lead as the Raptors got into serious foul trouble before the incident which fired up the Raptors who came just shy of erasing the deficit losing 112-109 in clutch time.
Last season the clubs played four times splitting the season series. All four games were close battles decided by five points or less including a triple-overtime game the Raptors won in Miami. The Heat holds the all-time record with 59 wins in 97 matches versus the Raptors.
Toronto Raptors
For the second consecutive game, the Raptors weren’t happy with the officiating. Fred VanVleet picked up his fifth personal foul on the first play of the third quarter.
The veteran point guard managed to remain in the game while others on the team also fought the whistle. With Toronto trailing badly, however, one play in the third quarter shifted the momentum of the game.
Caleb Martin aggressively fouled Christian Koloko sending him to the floor then stood over the rookie taunting him. Koloko jumped back up but Martin responded by tackling him into the front row.
UPDATE: Martin received a one-game suspension, Koloko was fined $15k, and Nikola Jovic was suspended one game for leaving the bench. Not sure how the Heat got away with the latter – – video shows Gabe Vincent CLEARLY leaving bench and entering the fray (among others)!
I’ve offered both broadcast crews call of the incident as it was vastly different (shocker): TSN video | BallySports Suns video P.S. to the Heat announcer – learn the players’ names – it’s pronounced co-LOW-co — NOT Oh-co-co!
At the time of the foul, the Heat led 81-59 but the Raptors took umbrage with Koloko being ejected and it sparked a 17-2 run by the Dinos who chipped away at the massive deficit but couldn’t get closer than three points.
Scottie Barnes suffered a shoulder contusion early and later fell awkwardly after a dunk. spraining his ankle and needing help to exit the court.
He joins Chris Boucher (hamstring) and Otto Porter Jr (hamstring) all listed as questionable for Monday although Boucher is likely the only one who’ll suit up.
Miami Heat
It was a typical battle between the teams that came down to the wire but the Heat finally registered their first win of the season. Given how chippy the affair was and their history it’s likely this match should offer more of the same.
Jimmy Butler bounced back from the prior match when he failed to get to the line versus the Celtics getting 11 trips to the line.
He registered a game-high 24 points with four rebounds and five assists and spent much of the night trying to slow down Pascal Siakam (who led the Raptors with 23 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, a steal, and a block).
Kyle Lowry offered 17 points and six assists versus his former team while Max Strus scored 20 in a reserve role.
The two starters who are still seeking consistency had a decent showing with Tyler Herro offering 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists while Bam Adebayo added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Victor Oladipo (knee) and Omer Yurtseven (ankle) are both listed as questionable for Monday. Martin and Jovic will serve their one-game suspensions.

Free Toronto Raptors vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
It was a rough weekend for the Raptors who lost to the Nets on Friday, didn’t get to their hotel rooms in Miami until 4:00 am, and then lost the chippy affair on Saturday.
Whenever the Heat and Raptors play the games are typically physical but Saturday’s match was more like a playoff game than the third game of the season.
Don’t expect Monday to be any different as both clubs play to their defensive and gritty identity, albeit the Raptors now have extra reason to be fired up after the loss.
On top of losing consecutive close battles in clutch time, their next two matches feature the winless 76ers who like the Heat will be motivated to end the losing and also have an existing feisty rivalry with the Raptors featuring the 2019 and 2022 playoff series between the clubs.
Welcome to the 2022-23 NBA season, where the Eastern Conference already looks and feels like late spring basketball in October!
