Wednesday, March 16th, 2022 finds the Toronto Raptors facing the LA Clippers for the second and final meeting this season. The Raptors won the initial match 116-108 on December 31st.
Both teams last played on Monday with the Raptors routing the Lakers 114-103 while the Clippers battled the Cavaliers and despite missing core starters pushed Cleveland to overtime but succumbed 111-120.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Clippers winning both contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 28 of their 51 matches.
Toronto Raptors
It’s a fight for the sixth seed in the East and unfortunately, the Raptors got the short end of the stick with the Clippers this week. That’s because LA was playing the Cavaliers on Monday but elected to rest their top two offensive threats. Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris plus Robert Covington was out for personal reasons.
Entering this match all three are expected to be back on the court. The match in Cleveland was the last of a three-game Eastern road trip so LA likely decided to rest Jackson and Morris since they would be back home for this match prior to hitting the road for two games in the West.
Toronto did get the fortune of facing the Lakers on the second game of a back-to-back set but the way LeBron and co are playing it’s highly likely they would’ve won that match anyway.
Rookie Scottie Barnes almost single-handedly ended the game in the first quarter scoring 15 of his eventual 21 points that he bolstered with nine rebounds, five assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Pascal Siakam collected his seventh consecutive 20+ point outing with a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds, plus five assists, a steal, and a block. Fred VanVleet was back on the court after taking the prior match off and struggled with his shot (3 of 14) but collected 11 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
That said, his mere presence allowed Gary Trent Jr. to have more space on the court and it equated to him scoring 28 points. Precious Achuiwa also registered a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds while Chris Boucher offered 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Fred VanVleet (knee) is questionable for Wednesday. OG Anunoby (finger) and Malachi Flynn (hamstring) are out indefinitely.
LA Clippers
The Clippers continue to hold onto the eighth seed in the West 4.5 games back of the seventh-seeded Wolves and 5.5 games up on the ninth-seeded Lakers. Other than the Suns who sit atop the Conference with a 7.5 edge over their closest competitor (Grizzlies) the Clippers appear to be locked in their spot.
Technically they could shift spots but it would require them going on a lengthy losing streak combined with Minny suffering copious losses or the Lakers going on a lengthy win streak. Based on how those two clubs are playing it’s unlikely to occur.
With that reality in mind, it’s also understandable why coach Ty Lue gave some of his core an extra day off as they prep for the stretch run and inevitably the play-in tournament.
Jackson and Morris are probable while Robert Covington (personal) was upgraded to probable for Wednesday. Norman Powell (foot), Jason Preston (foot), George (elbow), and Leonard (knee) are out indefinitely. Jay Scrubb (toe) is lost for the season.

Free Toronto Raptors vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
This is the final game of the six-game road trip for the Raptors who have made up major ground on the Cavaliers via their four-game win streak. A win by Toronto and a loss by the Cavaliers (who play Philly) would put the clubs in a tie but the Raptors still need to win one extra game because Cleveland has the tiebreaker.
The Clippers don’t have a ton of size upfront aside from Ivica Zubac so expect the Raptors to live in the paint tonight.
