Monday, March 21st, the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls play for the fourth and final time this season. Chicago leads the series 2-1 with wins October 25th (111-108) and January 26th (111-105) while the Raptors won the last meeting 127-120 that required overtime on February 3rd.
Toronto is playing a back-to-back set having won in Philly 93-88 on Sunday while the Bulls last played on Friday losing 102-129 versus the Suns.
Last season, the teams played three times the Bulls sweeping the regular-season series. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 53 of their 98 matches.
Toronto Raptors
The Raptors are likely kicking themselves for letting the Friday match versus the Lakers get away from them but they remain red hot having won six of their last seven matches all of which were on the road.
In the victory versus the 76ers they were missing floor general Fred VanVleet and top defender OG Anunoby and were trailing by 16 points but still found a way to win.
Head coach Nick Nurse reached into his bag of unconventional tricks and started Scottie Barnes at the point plus inserted Precious Achiuwa into the starting rotation which paid massive dividends.
Achiuwa registered 21 points with nine rebounds as he continues to improve in his first year with the Raptors and is thriving in this system. Pascal Siakam led the way for the Raps with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds with five assists.
Barnes collected 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists while Chris Boucher offered a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.
Toronto erased a 16 point deficit against Philly and won the key categories including rebounding (56-40) with 20 offensive boards, fast-break scoring (16-10), and points in the paint (50-40).
Most impressively on a night where the offense wasn’t necessarily clicking they battled defensively as Nurse’s teams are wont to do and held Philly to 14 points in the fourth quarter. James Harden scored just two points in the frame (both on free throws) and Toronto got him to turn the ball over four times in that frame (six in total).
Fred VanVleet (knee) is probable for Monday. Malachi Flynn (hamstring) and OG Anunoby (finger) are out indefinitely.
Chicago Bulls
Although Alex Caruso is back in the lineup the Bulls continue to struggle having lost three in a row and eight of their last 10 matches. The major issue for Chicago remains trying to beat the better teams in the association.
They are 2-17 against the top four seeds in each conference and when you factor in teams with 60 percent or better winning percentages (so adding in the Mavericks) they are 3-18.
Chicago leads the series versus the Raptors 2-1 but Toronto was missing Pascal Siakam in the first meeting early in the season and Fred VanVleet in the second match. Granted the Bulls are also dealing with being shorthanded.
The biggest news for the Bulls is Patrick Williams will return to the lineup tonight on a minutes restriction (he played in only five games this year). On the opposite end of the spectrum, Lonzo Ball’s knee is not responding well to the treatment and remains out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Toronto is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games.
- Chicago is 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Toronto’s last 11 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Chicago’s last 7 games.
- The Raptors are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games.
- The Bulls are 35-17-1 ATS in their last 53 games as a favorite.
Toronto Raptors vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Analysis:
Chicago has the decided rest advantage having been off since Friday while Toronto is playing the second game of a back-to-back. It’s expected VanVleet will be back in the lineup which will help provide some fresh legs for the Dino’s.
The Raptors are one of the best teams on the road and also strong in consecutive games with a record of 10-5 in second games. They’re also keen to get this victory with the Cavaliers contest looming on Thursday and the potential to overtake them for the sixth seed.
