Monday, November 7th, the Toronto Raptors, and Chicago Bulls finish a home-and-home, back-to-back set in Chicago. The Raptors won the front side (113-104) in Toronto on Sunday.
The teams will play a total of three times with Toronto hosting the final meeting on February 28th.
In history, the Bulls own the advantage of winning 54 of the clubs’ 100 meetings. Last season the teams played four times with the Bulls taking advantage of the Raptors’ injuries and a COVID outbreak winning three of four matches.
Toronto Raptors
The Raptors entered Sunday under a situation of bad news – – good news. The bad was losing Pascal Siakam for at least two weeks following his injury on Friday when he strained his groin slipping on a wet spot on the floor in Dallas.
Previous groin injuries suggest taking more caution in the return date so they won’t rush him back. The 28-year-old has been living up to his stated intention to be considered one of the top five players averaging 24.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game.
The good news was Fred VanVleet was back after missing three games due to lower back stiffness. He made an immediate impact delivering a double-double of 30 points and 11 assists (five rebounds, five 3-pointers).
Scottie Barnes also registered a double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Siakam’s fellow Cameroonian Christian Koloko showcased why the Raptors’ future looks brighter and brighter.
The rookie registered career highs with 11 points, seven rebounds, and SIX blocks with his defensive presence clearly getting into the Bulls’ heads. Case in point, the Raptors outscored Chicago 62-38 in the paint, grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, and forced 23 turnovers leading to 21 points.
Raptors opponents average the fourth-fewest points (106.1) per game and this is made all the more impressive given they’ve played the toughest schedule of the teams with winning records facing only ONE non-playoff club (Spurs – who they beat by 43 points!).
Opponents shoot 46.5% (18th) from the field and 36.2% (20th) on the perimeter. Offensively the Raptors rank 15th for points score (115.1) while shooting 45.8% from the field (21st) and 36.% from the deep (11th).
While there is still work to be done, on both sides of the court this squad is confident which is best demonstrated by league-best plus +6 differential in fourth quarters
Siakam (groin) will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Khem Birch (knee) is questionable for Monday.
Chicago Bulls
A game after Nick Nurse threw everything but the kitchen sink at Luka Doncic, former Raptor DeMar DeRozan got the same treatment but it proved more successful partially because the Raptors were more aggressive on the doubles.
DeRozan attempted only nine field goals and one game after he scored 20 points at the charity stripe (on 22 attempts) he got just six attempts although he still managed to score a team-high 20 points dishing two dimes with five turnovers.
Nikola Vucevic (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Alex Caruso (11 rebounds, 11 assists) each registered double-doubles with the latter struggling mightily to score (1 of 11).
The positive takeaway was the Bulls bench dominated Toronto outscoring them 34 to 19.
Chicago ranks ninth scoring 111.5 points per game while shooting 45.6% from the field (22nd) and 37.7% from deep (9th).
On defense, they hold opponents to an average of 110.5 points per game (10th) while allowing foes to shoot 46.6% from the field and 38% from the perimeter ranking 20th and 25th respectively.
Zach LaVine sat out Sunday presumably for load management but there is no update on his availability for Monday.
Andre Drummond (shoulder) and Coby White (quad) were both out Sunday and listed as questionable for Monday. Lonzo Ball (knee) remains out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games.
- Under is 6-2 in the Bulls’ last 8 games playing on 0 days rest.
- The Raptors are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
- The Bulls are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction:
In terms of adjustments, Toronto shot almost 10% below their 3-point average despite getting copious wide-open looks and the big shift should be the DeRozan factor especially since it’s likely Zach LaVine will play negating that Raptors’ double-team strategy.
Nurse likely uses Precious Achiuwa more in this match (he played just 14 mins) and possibly uses Delano Banton or Malachi Flynn offering some fresh legs to the mix.
Chicago is 0-2 on the second game of back-to-backs this year and they allowed the most and third most opponent points in those games while Toronto is 0-1 (they arrived in Miami at 4 AM and still only lost by three).
Last season they both played 17 B2B sets with Chicago 9-8 and Toronto 11-6 in the second game.
So far this season these consecutive games against the same team have overwhelmingly resulted in splits so again that should favor the Bulls but I doubt they cover and I won’t be surprised if the Raptors steal the game if it’s close in the final frame.
