Monday, February 28th, the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets tip-off for the third time in the front side of a home and home/back-to-back set. Brooklyn won both prior meetings on November 7th (116-103) and December 14th (131-129 the latter requiring overtime to decide.
Toronto returned from the break to play the first of three consecutive back-to-back sets losing badly in both matches to the Hornets (93-125) and the Hawks (100-127) while the Nets beat the Bucks (126-123) on Saturday.
Toronto Raptors
Reflecting back to the end of December, the Raptors were so decimated by COVID four players signed to hardship contracts met each other on route to the Cavaliers arena where the unfamiliar group got blown out 99-144.
It marked the first time the Raptors lost by 20 points this season something that didn’t happen again until two games prior to the break (February 14th) versus the Pelicans (90-120).
So the fact they’ve lost consecutive games by 20 points since returning from the break is a bit of a red flag especially since they were 2-0 against both Charlotte and Atlanta with easy victories.
Granted OG Anunoby is out, Fred VanVleet is playing through a knee injury that is limiting his movement and Pascal Siakam played through illness.
Ultimately, it demonstrates just how little leeway (depth) this team has when their core isn’t fully healthy. It might also be a sign of the wear and tear of playing that core so much with all five starters ranking in the top 25 of minutes played and three in the top five.
Specifically, VanVleet (1st), Siakam (2nd), Anunoby (5th), Scottie Barnes (20th), and Gary Trent Jr. (24th).
OG Anunoby (finger) is seeing a specialist today (Monday) for an opinion about the small fracture in his ring finger.
Brooklyn Nets
Following the trade of Thaddeus Young to the Raptors, the Spurs who acquired Goran Dragic in return bought out his contract freeing him up to join the Brooklyn Nets.
He made his debut on Saturday for the Nets. Dragic left the Raptors to deal with personal issues but in a bit of an odd turn showed up in social media happily working out at the Heat facilities or out and about in Miami.
Perhaps it’s a coincidence, but it feels similar to what Andre Iguodala did with Memphis. Clearly Dragic didn’t want to play for Toronto and although the Raptors took the high road it’s odd he’s suddenly okay to play after months of being unavailable.
In that regard, Tuesday should be interesting in terms of how fans (albeit a very limited crowd) in Toronto will receive him.
Kyrie Irving is ineligible to play in either of these games due to state/city COVID protocols. Ben Simmons (conditioning), Kevin Durant (knee), and Joe Harris (ankle) are all out indefinitely.

Free Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
In post game interviews Saturday Nick Nurse and Fred VanVleet touched on a meetin they had following the game and how angry everyone was over their post break performances.
While they were dealing with injury/illness the comments focused on their lack of defensive intensity which is the tenant of their identity. Expect better Monday.
Seventh-seeded Toronto is up a single game over the Nets so these two games could have a major impact on the standings so I’m still leaning to the Raptors getting back on track but another loss will ring alarm bells.
