Monday, January 31st, finds the Toronto Raptors facing the Atlanta Hawks for the first time this season. The teams will play four times this season with Atlanta hosting again on February 26th while Toronto will host February 4th and April 25th.
The Raptors arrive following a marathon game in Miami that needed three overtime frames to decide with Toronto prevailing 124-120 while the Hawks are playing the second game of a back-to-back set having defeated the Lakers 129-121.
Toronto Raptors
In the last 17 games, the Raptors have been in several clutch time battles versus elite teams losing by five or fewer points to the 76ers, Suns, Heat (January 17th), and Mavericks.
Although the victory versus the Bucks on the second night of a back-to-back was big, the win in Miami was of the statement variety and punctuated why most of the elite teams would want to avoid Toronto in the first round of the playoffs.
Pascal Siakam delivered a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds plus six assists, four steals, and four blocks including back-to-back blocks on Butler in the play of the game.
Gary Trent Jr. led scoring with 33 points adding five rebounds, and five steals. Rookie Scottie Barnes registered 22 points with nine rebounds and hit two crucial free throws at the end of regulation to force overtime.
OG Anunoby served up a double-double of 20 points and a career-best 14 rebounds plus six assists, three steals, and a block while providing lock-down defense on Jimmy Butler specifically in the overtime frames.
Fred VanVleet struggled shooting all night (7 of 22), but hit three of his five 3-pointers in overtime finishing with 19 points and eight assists.
Khem Birch (nose) and Goran Dragic (personal) are both out.
Atlanta Hawks
The win streak reached seven and has everyone asking where this team was all season. If they could’ve played like this all along — why weren’t they?
I’ll have to watch more game film but I’m still not fully convinced this team just needed to flip a switch – it doesn’t equate for me. Some teams expected the early season Hawks but as the streak continued most of the teams were in the same bracket as Atlanta (except the Kings).
Sorry Lakers fans but your team has big issues outside of Anthony Davis and LeBron James with the latter not participating Sunday in the loss to Atlanta.
The Hawks two stars led the way with double-doubles as Trae Young posted 36 points and 12 assists while John Collins offered 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Onyeka Okongwu (16), Clint Capela (15), and Bogdan Bogdanovic (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
The Hawks are fully healthy.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Hawks are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Raptors are 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Atlanta’s last 9 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Toronto’s last 11 games.
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
If the Raptors have no legs no one will blame them especially after all five starters played between 54 and 57 minutes in Miami.
Officiating will also be a factor so keep an eye on the early whistle. In Miami, the refs allowed the teams to play because both squads play aggressive defense. But there are other nights where the officials call every little ticky-tack foul and that will benefit Atlanta.
Last season Young got 14 and 16 free throws versus Toronto and while the league has “changed the rules” something tells me he’ll get those same calls and be allowed leniency on his defensive end.
If I’m right, that’s a lot for the Raptors to overcome and while I feel the Raptors have the better two-way team and play with more consistency by the same token, I think the fatigue from Saturday is going to factor.
Couple that with the fact, the Raptors are playing a back-to-back and get to face the Heat again on Tuesday – – with that in mind, will Nick Nurse elect to shut down his starters early if things get out of hand?
