San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio won five in a row, all at home, before dropping the first of an eight-game road trip that will take it all the way through the All-Star Break and then out the other side.
The Spurs got beat up in Sacramento, which is no longer a refuge on a West Coast tour. The Kings’ bench was effective with the Spurs down Derrick White, which thrust Davis Bertans into the starting lineup. Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli weren’t nearly as effective without their third act and Marvin Bagley and Yogi Ferrell had big nights for Sacramento.
It appears Gregg Popovich is waving the towel on Wednesday in Golden State to prepare for the rest of the trip. Derrick White remains out with a heel and will miss this game, too, but be back afterward. Both DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge are listed as out to rest.
So Wednesday will almost certainly be a loss but that means the Spurs will be reloaded for this game in Portland. It’s the second night of a back-to-back and Bertans will likely be a starter again but the horses will be ready to go for Pop.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Trail Blazers have taken a little pre-All Star Break break. They have played just once since January 30th and it was a bad loss, at home, against Miami.
The Heat shot 54 percent and the Blazers were flat the whole night with two exceptions: CJ McCollum, who shot 13-for-25 and scored 33 points and Jake Layman, who went 11-for-17 with 25 points and zero turnovers off the bench. Everybody else looked lethargic and unprepared to play.
All the time off (Portland has another two days off after this game and will have played twice in 10 days) should help acclimate Rodney Hood to his new surroundings in Portland.
The Blazers swung a deal earlier this week to bring Hood in from Cleveland, in exchange for Nik Stauskas and Wade Baldwin. The hope is that Hood will bolster a bench that gave up some shooting in Stauskas for a different kind of scorer in Hood.
Hood was a Blazer when Portland hosted the Heat but didn’t play. This should be his first game of action.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction: Blazers bounce back.
I’m not playing this one because the Blazers will the favorites and I’m not sure they should be, at least not anything much more than -110 or so. San Antonio is going to hit the ground running following Wednesday’s tilt at Oracle.
The Blazers do have to show something to the home crowd after Tuesday’s stinker.
