Saturday, December 14th finds Western Conference foes the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns facing each other for the first time this year. Although the Suns are listed as the home team, in reality, both clubs will perform off-site as they travel to Mexico City.
Last season, the squads played four times with the San Antonio Spurs winning three of the four games. The Spurs hold the all-time record having bested the Suns in 96 of their 173 matches.
San Antonio Spurs
Sometimes rest isn’t necessarily a good thing or at least too much of it which is what the Spurs found out after five days off. San Antonio lost to the hapless Cleveland Cavaliers who arrived sporting an eight-game losing streak.
The Cavs jumped on the rusty Spurs building an early 10 point lead but San Antonio battled back and held the lead in clutch time. With the Spurs up by three-points, 14 seconds on the clock and DeMar DeRozan at the line the game seemed well in hand.
But then the shooting guard missed both free throws, Kevin Love hit a three to tie the game and the Cavaliers pulled off the upset in overtime.
Five Spurs reached double-digits as DeRozan led the way with 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists while LaMarcus Aldridge delivered a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The trio of Derrick White (17), Patty Mills (10) and Lonnie Walker IV (10) were the other Spurs to contribute double-digit scoring.
On the season, DeMar DeRozan is the team leader in scoring (21.4 points) assists (4.8) and field goal percentage (50.6%). LaMarcus Aldridge tops the team leaderboard for rebounding (6.7), and blocks (1.7) while Dejounte Murray is the steals leader (1.7).
The Spurs have no injuries to report.
After starting the season on fire building a 7-4 record the Suns experienced a tough slog that included Ricky Rubio missing four games and Aron Baynes missing nine. The resulting effect was the team went 4-9 in their next 13 games.
In their last game, the Suns were bested by the lottery bound Memphis Grizzlies who won three of the four quarters and got the 115-108 victory. Six Suns hit double digits in the loss with Frank Kaminsky (24) the top point man.
Devin Booker (15 points, 10 assists) and Kelly Oubre Jr (14 points and 13 rebounds) posted double-doubles. Ricky Rubio scored 22 points and dished eight assists while Aron Baynes (12) and Cameron Johnson (11) chipped in with double-figure scoring.
The players who lead the team in stat categories are Devin Booker with 25.0 points and 50.7% field goal percentage. Ricky Rubio with 9.2 assists and Dario Saric with 7.2 rebounds. Hustle categories are led by Mikal Bridges who grabs 1.3 steals while Kelly Oubre Jr. blocks 0.9 shot per game.
Four Suns are on the injured reserve list but all listed as probable including Booker (wrist contusion), Johnson (hip), Baynes (calf) and Saric (lower back).
Deandre Ayton will be eligible to return from his suspension on December 19th which should find him returning to play on Tuesday versus the Clippers.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
San Antonio has made this trip previously so know what to expect but the Suns have the overall greater talent and depth. Typically I’d pick the experience and know how of the Spurs but they’ve become a difficult team to count on this season.
