Saturday, October 22nd, the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers play for the first time this season.
San Antonio played on Friday versus Indiana so this is their first back-to-back set of the season. The Spurs took an early double-figure lead against the Pacers and had to fight to hold onto the (137-134) win.
Philly last played Thursday losing to the Bucks. It was their second loss in as many games this season having lost on opening night to the Celtics.
Last season, the squads played twice with the 76ers taking both contests and are on a current seven-game win streak versus San Antonio. The Spurs hold the advantage all-time having won 58 times of the club’s 101 meetings.
San Antonio Spurs
This season for the Spurs is sort of a deja vu year — Gregg Popovich and RC Buford are hoping to channel the energy that brought them Tim Duncan back in the summer of 1997 and led to 22 consecutive trips to the playoffs and five titles.
With Dejounte Murray traded the Spurs won’t just be in the market to win the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes they’ll be adding qualified prospects with all the draft picks they’ve added.
The best teams at finding diamonds late in the draft are the Spurs, Raptors and Heat so don’t be surprised if San Antonio doesn’t spend much time playing in the lottery portion of the league.
In the interim, they’ve invested in the development of Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Josh Primo, and defensive specialist Jeremy Sochan.
Several of those youngsters factored in the victory Friday with Johnson and Vassell both scoring 23 points (although Josh Richardson led the team with 27 points off the bench).
Philadelphia 76ers
This is far from how the 76ers were hoping to begin the season. Although they’ve been in both games they’ve come up short and it’s seemed like Doc Rivers is allowing James Harden to run the offense.
He’s an excellent passing guard so that seems logical, but too frequently there were offensive sets where Harden elects to call his own number and runs a time-consuming iso-ball play.
This isn’t new for the 76ers who’ve ranked last (or near the bottom – 24th) of field goal attempts per game the past two seasons. It’s plausible opponents have done their homework and hence the elite defensive clubs (like the Celtics and Bucks) know what’s coming.
Fortunately for Philly, the Spurs are invested in tanking, will arrive fatigued from playing the Pacers, and won’t be as invested in winning.
As for the loss to the Bucks, Embiid did register a double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) but he shot poorly (6-21) and looked disengaged frequently passing the ball right back to Harden when he tried to run a play for him.
Not sure if Embiid felt Harden had the better matchup — OR — it was sending his new PG a message that he wasn’t going to force trying to score if Harden is going to run out the shot clock on every set.
Harden was successful though with a near triple-double of 31 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, two steals, and a block. Tyrese Maxey was the only other double-figure scorer (15) in the loss.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Spurs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games.
- The 76ers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
- Over is 4-1 in Spurs’ last 5 games playing on 0 days rest.
- Under is 9-4 in the 76ers’ last 13 overall.
- Over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Philadelphia between these clubs
San Antonio Spurs vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Analysis:
With the 76ers losing consecutive games to start the season it’s a safe bet the Spurs will pay the price for those losses. Suffice to say the Spurs don’t have a shot of winning this game. The big question is whether Philly will cover the spread – I’m thinking yes since they need to register a feel-good victory.
