Saturday, March 26th, finds the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the fourth and final time this season. San Antonio lead the season series 2-1 with wins on December 12th (112-97) and February 12th (124-114) while the Pelicans won on March 18th (124-91).
San Antonio last played on Wednesday defeating the Blazers 133-96 while the Pelicans defeated the Bulls 126-109.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Mavericks winning two of the three contests. The Spurs hold the advantage all-time winning 52 of their 72 matches versus the Pelicans.
San Antonio Spurs
Including this game, the Spurs have nine games remaining and are trailing the Pelicans by two games for the final play-in seed in the West. To suggest this game is a must-win situation for Gregg Popovich and his young charges would be putting it mildly.
It’s an uphill battle for the Spurs to reach that play-in berth but stranger things have happened to close out a season.
In the most recent victory, young rising star Dejounte Murray led the Spurs with 28 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
Keldon Johnson added 26 points and four points. Jakob Poeltl and Devin Vassell each provided 16 points while Josh Richardson picked up the bench with 15 points.
Lonnie Walker (back), Romeo Langford (hamstring), and Devontae Cacok (heel) are all questionable for Saturday. Doug McDermott (ankle) is lost for the season.
New Orleans Pelicans
A couple of updates on the Pelicans who welcomed Larry Nance Jr. to the rotation in his debut for the Pelicans. He’d missed 18 games since being traded due to a knee injury. In 18:11 he registered nine points, four rebounds, and a block.
The other intriguing news out of New Orleans came courtesy of Zion Williamson who decided it would be okay to show off his dunking skills much to the chagrin of the Pels who haven’t cleared him for that type of activity.
On one hand, it’s understandable if Williamson feels he’s ready for more. But from the franchise’s perspective, a player who kept suffering physical setbacks and required a second procedure on his foot offers a reason why they might be annoyed he was jeopardizing his recovery.
Moreover, the fanbase that has only witnessed him play 85 games in three seasons might not be overly amused he can perform that type of dunk but can’t play for the team and help them secure a playoff seed. (just saying).
Brandon Ingram (hamstring) and Zion Williamson (foot) are out indefinitely. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
