The Spurs really have looked good, but one thing to keep in mind is that their latest win—an impressive one on paper, came 114-105 over a Philadelphia 76ers team that clearly has a lot to figure out. Jakob Poeltl at 27 finds himself as one of the old heads on the roster, but he’s looking like he could officially be a double-double starter for the first time in his career.
There’s a lot to like about San Antonio. But even a nine-point spread might be a bit much against Minnesota.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves enter this contest having won their opening-night matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, then they fell almost shockingly to the undefeated Utah Jazz (who even more shockingly remain undefeated). Their last outing was another win over OKC bringing the record to 2-1.
Minnesota has a lot to play for this season after taking the risk of adding Rudy Gobert to the frontcourt with Karl-Anthony Towns. At least, the Timberwolves have a lot more than the Spurs, or that’s how it should look when the year is all said and done.
But right now, Minnesota, mostly due to its own schedule, doesn’t have anything to show as far as competition against a real benchmark for contenders. So far, it has two wins in three games where the opponent is tanking.
A win over San Antonio won’t prove the Timberwolves are contenders, but avoiding a loss feels just as important at this point.
