Saturday, February 26th, the San Antonio Spurs face the Miami Heat for the second and final time this season. Miami won the initial match 112-95 on February 3rd.
Both teams are playing a back-to-back set as they return from the break with the Spurs having outlasted the Wizards in double-overtime 157-153 while the Heat bested the Knicks 115-100.
Last season the clubs played twice with Miami winning both contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 44 wins in 68 matches versus the Heat.
San Antonio Spurs
Gregg Popovich needs one more win to tie Lenny Wilkins’ record of 1,335. His Spurs have won five of their last seven matches and seem intent on claiming one of the play-in seeds having closed the gap between themselves and Portland to a single game after their Friday win.
While several All-Stars haven’t produced great games upon returning from the break (Trae Young, Fred VanVleet for example) Dejounte Murray may have been tired but delivered for his team with another triple-double (31 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists).
His teammates were ready to go however with two teammates registering career highs in points. Specifically, Keldon Johnson offered 32 points plus seven rebounds and Jakob Poeltl registered 28 points and 11 rebounds via his double-double plus two blocks.
All five starters plus Lonnie Walker (23) scored in double-figures with four collecting 23 or more in what was the highest-scoring game this season.
Joshua Primo (wrist), Romeo Langford (groin), and Josh Richardson (shoulder) are all questionable for Saturday.
Miami Heat
If you’re looking for a reason to buy stock on the Miami Heat consider this stat – the quartet of Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Kyle Lowry, and Tyler Herro have only played 65 minutes together this season (prior to Friday’s match).
And when the starting five of Butler, Adebayo, Lowry, PJ Tucker, and Duncan Robinson are on the court they hold opponents to 92.5 points per game which is the second-best ranking for any 5-man lineup this season (with over 100 minutes played).
Moreover, that lineup wins 70 percent of their games. Adebayo is delivering particularly on the defensive end leading all centers with 1.5 blocks per game and when he’s the nearest defender holds his opponents to 39 percent shooting.
Robinson who struggled to find his 3-point shot to start the season has steadily improved and is feasting on catch and shoot long balls connecting at a robust 45.0 percent.
Dewayne Dedmon (personal) is questionable for Saturday. Morris (neck) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Heat are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head matches
- The Heat are 6-3-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Although the Spurs love to play spoiler and Murray has been a revelation, the Heat look dialed in and ready to build toward the postseason with their sights set on that top seed having retaken the took spot following their victory Friday.
With all the lanky wings on San Antonio they should offer an intriguing defensive challenge for Miami who struggles against a similar situation (Raptors) but in fairness were missing Lowry in those two matches.
The clubs’ records in the second games of back-to-back sets is somewhat surprising – – San Antonio is 6-6 while the Heat are 2-7. However, Miami only had their core available in one of those seven losses as one of Butler, Adebayo or Lowry were missing in the other six matches.
With the core healthy now, I think they’ll prevail for the victory, especially with the Spurs playing to double-overtime and having to travel to Miami.
