On Monday, February 28th, the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies play the third of four scheduled meetings this season. Memphis won both prior matches on December 31st (118-105) and January 26th (118-110). San Antonio will host the final game on March 30th.
Both teams played Saturday with the Spurs battling the Heat but falling 129-133 while the Grizzlies won 116-110 versus the Bulls.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Grizzlies winning two of the three contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 74 wins in 104 matches versus the Grizzlies.
San Antonio Spurs
With 21 games remaining on the Spurs schedule it’s a veritable certainty Gregg Popovich will create a new mark in the history books for the most regular-season wins.
The current top dog is Don Nelson who has 1,334 one more than Pops so in the next few games the man many consider to be the best coach of the past two decades in the NBA and arguably ever will claim the mantel that would add fuel to that debate.
San Antonio enters this week in a tie with the Blazers just outside the play-in seeding and trails the Pelicans by a single point. The question is whether the franchise feels getting their youngsters’ playoff experience is more important than improving their draft position.
For well over two decades the Spurs have done things differently than other clubs and quite frankly became the benchmark template for franchises that wanted to build culture and identity.
This season, however, they’ve conducted business differently. For example, it was unheard of for San Antonio to get involved in mid-season trades yet they were one of the handful of most active teams at the deadline.
That they picked up some extra draft picks in the process should be a bit frightening to their peers as they’ve proven their moxie at grabbing talents well down the board. So imagine what they would do with a high lottery pick!
Doug McDermott (knee) and Romeo Langford (groin) are questionable for Monday.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although the Grizzlies demonstrated their youth losing the game prior and after the All-Star break they got back to winning in an impressive performance against one of the East’s elite on Saturday.
Granted the Bulls are shorthanded missing their two (arguably three) best defenders but the Grizzlies never really looked like this was a game they would concede.
Their cornerstone talent Ja Morant made sure of it with a career-best 46 point performance that included a display of his range hitting three of his four 3-point attempts but also featured highlight-reel dunks.
And he credited Michael Jordan for his career night saying the Bulls ran a film clip during one of the timeouts and it motivated him when he returned to the court. Seriously — is there anyone as fun to watch in the game right now?
Morant finished with 46 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Big man Steven Adams had a monster double-double of 12 points and 21 rebounds (including eight offensive boards).
Brandon Clarke (eye) is questionable, Yves Pons (thigh) was downgraded to out while John Konchar (ankle) is also out on Monday. ‘
The mystery surrounding Dillon Brooks’ (ankle) return continues as he’s long surpassed the five-week projection but remains listed as out indefinitely.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
The initial injury report still had Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl as unknowns but they’re no longer listed so that should make this a more competitive match. Unfortunately, I still think Pops will have to wait until Thursday to collect that victory that ties Nelson.
