So far, I’m the only person I know who really likes the Spurs in the West this season. They’re big underdogs among the three teams out in California, Houston, Denver, Portland, etc. but they’ve won each of their first three games and have plenty of room to improve as the season goes on.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs may be 3–0 in the standings but they’re 0–3 against the spread.
The Spurs beat the Knicks by nine, Wizards by two, and Trail Blazers by three. All three games were played at home.

DeMar DeRozan led San Antonio with 27 points. Derrick White scored 21 of the bench’s 50 and the Spurs’ defense held Portland under 40% from the field to win a game in which it was -8 in the turnover battle.
Dejounte Murray went just 3/8 and turned it over four times but he had seven rebounds, eight assists, a steal, and a block in 22 minutes.
Those rebound and assists numbers are where he’s been at in the first three games of the season and he’s averaging a full two steals per, so far. He’s a different defender than Kawhi Leonard was in the early part of his career with the Spurs but, potentially, close to as impactful. His defense is just another way San Antonio can win a game in 2019-2020.
Los Angeles Clippers
Speaking of Kawhi Leonard.. he plays for the Clippers now, who won their third game in four this season, 111–96 over the Hornets on Monday.
Leonard had 30 points in 30 minutes, seven rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals. This performance came immediately after a career-high ten assists in LA’s only loss of the season over the weekend, against the Suns.

In fact, Leonard has 30 assists in four games for an average of 7.5 per game. He averaged 3.3 per game for the Raptors last season and has never put up more than 3.5 per game in any season of his career.
And Paul George hasn’t even suited up yet. The plan is to hold him out for the first ten games of the season as he eases back from a shoulder issue.
