Tuesday, April 5th finds the San Antonio Spurs playing the Denver Nuggets for the fourth and final meeting this season. Denver leads the series 2-1 taking the initial meeting 102-96 on October 22nd and the last match 127-112 on December 11th while the Spurs won 123-111 on December 9th.
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Spurs beating the Blazers 113-92 while the Nuggets beat the Lakers 129-118.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Nuggets winning two of the three contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 119 wins in 194 matches versus the Nuggets.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs decided to get hot at the perfect time in the season collecting victories in six of their last seven games. Granted the majority of those victories occurred versus lottery teams or play-in seeds except the win versus the Warriors.
Dejounte Murray sat the last two games versus the Trail Blazers but in the five prior games was averaging 25.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 8.4 assists, and a steal per game while connecting on 43.3 percent of his six attempted 3-pointers.
The latter is significant as that was an area of Murray’s game that he hadn’t mastered. He’s listed as out for this match but given he was out for both games versus the Blazers and knowing how important this game is it wouldn’t be surprising if he was a late addition.
The Spurs are in the drivers seat with regards to the 10th seed in the play-in tournament now having pulled ahead of the Lakers. Although the teams tied their season series 2-2 San Antonio owns the tiebreak versus LA by virtue of a better conference record.
Sitting two games up on LA that means any combination of two Spurs wins or two Lakers losses would cement their berth. The Spurs face the Nuggets, Wolves, Warriors, and Mavericks while the Lakers play the Suns, Warriors, Thunder, and Nuggets.
Neither is an easy slate of games but the Warriors could be the team that helps out SAS if Popovich’s good friend Steve Kerr wants to rest some players versus the Spurs and also beat the Lakers.
Jakob Poeltl (back) was upgraded to probable, Romeo Langford (hamstring) is questionable while Dejounte Murray (illness) and Josh Landale (foot) are ruled out for Tuesday versus the Nuggets. Doug McDermott (ankle) is lost for the season.
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets could also help out the Spurs since they’ll close out the season against the Lakers and are one of the few teams with only three games in the final week (Spurs, Grizzlies).
All three matches are at home which is another advantage. Denver leapfrogged the Jazz this past weekend into the fifth seed and are a half-game up on Utah but the Jazz owns the tiebreaker having swept the season series.
Granted, the Nuggets are playing slightly better than the Jazz who’ve been stumbling of late. Utah plays four games this week (Grizzlies, Thunder, Suns, Blazers).
That could be a positive situation given they play the top two teams in the league or it could be a negative if Memphis and Phoenix rest core players since they’ve cemented their seeds and just want to get to the playoffs healthy.
There’s also a chance Ja Morant makes a return to get his rhythm back if his knee has improved but it makes more sense they bring him back against the Pels or the Celtics (last game of the season).
JaMychal Green (wrist) was upgraded to probable while Zeke Nnaji (hamstring) was downgraded to out Tuesday. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), Jamal Murry (ACL), and Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) are out indefinitely.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
Aside from seeding, Nikola Jokic is also in the mix to repeat as league MVP and put up an impressive double-double of 38 points and 18 rebounds plus six assists, two steals, and two blocks in the defeat of the Lakers.
Playing in Denver is never easy with the altitude, and if Murray can’t go it’s a big advantage for the Nuggets so I’m taking them to cover against the spread.
