San Antonio Spurs
Our forecast for Game 1 was pretty much on, if you ignored the moneyline. The Spurs ended up winning straight-up, which contradicted the final score prediction. Otherwise, it was close, low-scoring, and the Spurs did cover the 1H line with ease, which, after all, was the play we recommended.
But now looking ahead to Game 2 in Denver. This will be an especially difficult game for San Antonio to win because Denver is fighting for its life, trying to simply even the series before going to the AT&T Center.
Certainly, based on spot, Denver is the play here, though it would concern me to lay something like -300 on the moneyline because Game 1 did make it perfectly clear that these two teams are just about even, on the floor.
In fact, the Spurs may just be a little better because they have Gregg Popovich and what seems like more playoff basketball players. DeMar DeRozan hit big shots; Derrick White was a beast on both ends of the floor; and guys like Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli are just accustomed to what it takes to win in the playoffs.
Denver is a little green and looked it in Game 1. Nikola Jokic had a triple-double but he turned it over too often, including one inside a minute. Jamal Murray looked like Denver’s next guy, after Big Honey, and played well in spurts but missed the potential game-winning shot, a wide-open look from the elbow that your average pickup player will make most of the time.
Game 2 has to be about Denver’s role players: Will Barton, Monte Morris, and company. At this point, you may include Paul Millsap and Garry Harris in the mix. Those two were supposed to be the second-tier stars, along with Murray, but they have both just kind of lost their identity within the team.
It felt like a coin flip series before things began with a small edge to Denver in Game 7 because of the home court. Now, it certainly feels like the Spurs’ series to lose.
