Saturday, November 5th finds the San Antonio Spurs playing the Denver Nuggets for the first of three scheduled meetings this season. San Antonio will host the other matches on November 7th and March 10th.
The Spurs are finishing a back-to-back set having lost 106-113 to the Clippers on Friday while the Nuggets last played Thursday defeating the Thunder 122-110.
Last season the clubs played four times splitting the contests winning twice each. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 121 wins in 196 matches versus the Nuggets.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs hit the ground running becoming an early Cinderella story as they amassed five quick victories beating teams that were earmarked either as title contenders like the 76ers or rising up the ranks like the Timberwolves who they’ve beaten twice.
Unfortunately, they got hit by a buzzsaw in the form of the lengthy Raptors who took advantage of San Antonio’s reforming squad, and a rash of injuries that knocked out their top two players.
When it was all over the Spurs had given up 143 points and they had barely managed to put 100 on the board.
You won’t find Gregg Popovich or RC Buford crying over the loss as the intention (although not spoken aloud) is to tank.
They are hoping to strike franchise gold twice by nabbing wunderkid Victor Wembanyama. They’ve been here before when David Robinson was injured and the team lucked into the Tim Duncan sweepstakes.
Unlike some franchises, the Spurs know exactly how to do it and what to do if those lottery balls bounce in their favor.
The Spurs fell to 29th in opponent points allowed (121.6 per game) following the Toronto loss. They rank dead last for opponent field goal percentage (49.2%) and 20th for opponent perimeter percentage (35.7%).
In contrast, San Antonio thrives offensively scoring 115.8 points per game ranking eighth-best while shooting 45.9 percent from the field (22nd) and 38.4 percent from deep (7th).
Devin Vassell (knee) and Keldon Johnson (calf) returned to the lineup on Friday and had an immediate impact scoring 29 and 16 points respectively.
It was a back-and-forth affair between the clubs with several lead changes but the older Clippers were able to close out the game in clutch time to capture the victory.
Isaiah Roby (illness), and Romeo Langford (toe) are questionable for Saturday. Blake Wesley (knee) is out until early January.
Denver Nuggets
In the win versus the Thunder, Nikola Jokic collected his third triple-double of the season (15 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists) and 79th all-time. That latter achievement pushed him past Wilt Chamberlain for the most triple-doubles by a center in NBA history.
Aaron Gordon led the scoring effort with 27 points and Jamal Murray had his best showing since returning from injury scoring 24 points following up his 21 points in the previous match.
The Nuggets are allowing 116.1 points per game ranking 24th while opponents are shooting 47.7 percent from the field (24th) and 35.0 percent from the perimeter ranking 14th.
Offensively they’re scoring 115.1 points per game, tying them with the Knicks for 12th-best, and are among the most efficient shooting 48.4% from the field and 41.6% from deep ranking fourth and first respectively.
Bones Hyland (hip) and Ish Smith (calf) are questionable while Zeke Nnaji (ankle) is out on Saturday. Collin Gillespie (leg surgery) is out indefinitely.

Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
The Spurs have proven to be a squad that never backs down and won’t raise the white flag regardless of how much they fall behind. Conversely, the Nuggets haven’t hit their stride yet losing to some teams with less depth as well as a few tanking clubs.
However, the Nuggets have the rest advantage and the game is in Denver which means the altitude will add to the fatigue the Spurs will be feeling on the back-to-back. Not to mention Vassell and Johnson only just returned on Friday.
While I didn’t see the Raptors’ 43-point win margin coming (did anyone?) and maybe should be more open-minded to this 10.5 point spread, I still think the Spurs will keep the score closer than that margin.
