San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs smoked the Wizards on Friday night in a high-scoring game, just like we had it pegged to be. Marco Belinelli didn’t with a bad hip but the other eight regular for the Spurs scored in double-figures, including Jakob Poeltl, who is just on the bubble of Gregg Popovich’s regular rotation.

The Spurs are still the 8-seed out West, having played one more game than Oklahoma City and having one more loss. They finish up with two games they should win easily, so long as the motivation to win is still there: at Cleveland and then vs. Dallas. OKC goes to Minnesota before finishing with a back-to-back vs. Houston and at Milwaukee.

I believe the Spurs will win the tiebreak with the Thunder because they won two out of the three regular season matchups between the two teams. I really think you have to like San Antonio against Denver. The Spurs don’t have enough to beat Golden State but they certainly have more than any of Golden State’s other potential first-round opponents. It would be a fun series.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Both of the two regular season matchups between San Antonio and Cleveland this season are at the back of the schedule. The Spurs won a close game at home a little over a week ago, 116–110.

The two teams combined to go 26-for-62 from 3-point range in that game, good for close to 42 percent. Collin Sexton had 24 for Cleveland and DeMar DeRozan had 25 for San Antonio.

Cleveland will still end up with the best odds to land the top draft pick but it hasn’t been nearly as bad as it was all the way back at the start of the season, when the Cavaliers were the worst team in the league. Even that little bit of momentum is nice to carry away into draft season.
