The Spurs are coming off a 48-34 season in which they finished with the seventh seed. In the first round of the postseason they lost to the Nuggets in seven games. San Antonio faced some misfortune as they were without Dejounte Murray for the entire season. Murray missed the year with a knee injury.
With Murray back healthy alongside DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Rudy Gay the Spurs should be good. The Spurs haven’t missed the playoffs since 1997. It won’t be easy as the Western Conference is as deep as it’s been in recent memory. While there’s no sure thing like the Warriors in past seasons the conference is even tougher now.
The Spurs had one of the quieter off-seasons this summer but they did add talented rookie Keldon Johnson with their first round pick. The wing can do a bit of everything and has a good in-between game as a scorer.

Will San Antonio make the playoffs for the 23rd straight season? Find out below as we preview what their year may look like.
San Antonio Strengths:
The San Antonio Spurs have a good one-two punch with All-Stars DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. Last season DeRozan had arguably his best all-around and efficient season. He averaged 21.2 points, 6.2 assists, and 6 rebounds. Aldridge averaged 21.3 points and 9.2 rebounds. At 34-years-old he is still not showing signs of slowing down.
Defensively the Spurs should be strong. It’s the Gregg Popovich way. Last season the Spurs ranked 12th in defense. The Spurs don’t have many shut down defenders like they used to with Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green but they have smart defenders who know how to play team defense. They have guys like Patty Mills, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, and DeMarre Carroll who know what it takes on that end. The only guy considered a terrific defender on the roster as of now is Dejounte Murray.
San Antonio Spurs Weaknesses:
One of the biggest questions for the Spurs will be who will step in as their third scorer. Last season Rudy Gay was third on the team in scoring as he put up 13.7 points in 26.7 minutes. Gay had the most efficient season of his career shooting it at 50 percent. He is a good candidate but the Spurs should look to give him more looks.
Other guys who can step into that role are Murray and Derrick White. Murray is a good slasher who can go to the basket and make plays for others. He has ways to go with his three-point shot but he is an improving midrange shooter. White on the other hand is a good shooter but has issues with inconsistency as shown in the playoffs. In the season he averaged 9.9 points and 3.9 assists.
While it won’t make or break the Spurs it would be nice to know who they can count on each night after Aldridge and DeRozan.

San Antonio Spurs Betting Prediction:
The Over/Under for this team is set at 46.5 games. This is a difficult total to bet on as the West is ridiculously loaded. I can see a few teams winning around 45 games fighting for the final playoff spots unlike the East where they may be a few sub .500 teams in the postseason.
I expect the Spurs to win around 47 games so I would stay away from betting on the total unless you can somehow get it at around 45 games. The Spurs defense and system will make them difficult to beat. Whenever you have Pop on your side you’re a handful for the opposition.
The only way I can see the Spurs becoming an actual contender is if Murray takes a leap and plays at near a star level. Murray already has the defense and rebounding down he just has to find ways to become a better scorer. Either way the Spurs should grab one of the last few playoff spots in the West.
