Monday, October 31st, finds the Sacramento Kings and Charlotte Hornets playing in the first of two scheduled matches. Sacramento will host the teams second contest on December 19th.
Both teams had impressive victories this weekend with Sacramento finally collecting their first win of the season as they beat the Miami Heat 119-113 on Saturday.
Despite being shorthanded with both members of their starting backcourt out injured the Hornets shocked the Golden State Warriors defeating them 120-113 in overtime.
Last season, the squads played twice and split the matches each winning on their home court. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 36 of their 64 matches.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings will try to make it two wins in a row after beating a Heat club who are struggling to find their rhythm a season after they topped the Eastern Conference.
The win Saturday should build their confidence although they’ll face a Hornets team who just defeated the reigning NBA champions and home town hero Steph Curry.
Following their victory the Kings rank 17th offensively and a lackluster 24th on defense. Granted as I noted in the prior preview the Kings opening schedule has been tough.
The question is whether they can string together a few wins or continue to improve under Mike Brown as they progress through the season. A four-game road trip could be just what they doctor ordered to allow the players to bond.
They’ll definitely have opportunity this week particularly in Charlotte and Orlando but they’ll be trials too because the Heat will be fired up to get revenge and the Kings will finish their trip in San Francisco facing the defending champions.
Charlotte Hornets
While the Hornets opened the season with a win versus the Spurs the next two wins were arguably against the toughest opponents they’ve faced (Hawks, Warriors). Conversely, their losses might offer more hints to who this iteration of the club will be.
Certainly, there was no shame in losing to the Pelicans (while they were at full strength) especially while missing LaMelo Ball and they pushed the Knicks to overtime. The lone loss that raises questions was the 20 point defeat to the Magic who have just that win this season.
Considering they were playing the second game of a back-to-back their victory against the Warriors while missing both Terry Rozier and LaMelo Ball was their best of the season.
Several players contributed with P.J. Washington leading the way scoring 31 points, veteran Gordon Hayward adding 23 and Kelly Oubre Jr chipping in 18 points.
Ball has yet to play this season recovering from an ankle injury and isn’t expected back on Monday. Rozier (ankle) is questionable to play while Cody Martin (quad) missed Saturday and is still listed as out indefinitely.

Free Sacramento Kings vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Sacramento has played the tougher schedule but been home for four of their five matches and now hits the road for a four game trip. Charlotte has navigated injuries to core players while bouncing between wins and losses both by 20 point margins.
The small sample size and variance of their strength of schedules leaves more questions than answers about the identity of each club.
With both clubs registering important victories they’ll be riding high on the momentum wave, the question is which team will keep riding that crest.
The matchup everyone wants to see won’t happen this time with Ball still sidelined but I’m still I’m betting on the home town team eeking out the ‘W’ — that and a ton of points since neither side has shown any inclination to play more than one side of the court.
