The 2022-23 NBA season tips off for the Portland Trail Blazers vs Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, October 19th. Both teams desire a deep playoff run but history might not be on their side.
Damian Lillard is back to join the reshaped Blazers squad although he didn’t look like the typical Dame in the preseason as Portland delivered a 1-4 record only beating the international squad Maccabi Ra’anana while losing to the Clippers, Jazz, Warriors, and these Kings.
Conversely, Sacramento was one of two clubs (76ers) who were unbeaten in the preseason with wins versus the Lakers (twice), the Suns, and Blazers. The latter wasn’t close (126-94) despite Damian, Jerami Grant, and the core playing.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Kings winning two of the three contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record with 139 wins in 222 matches versus the Kings.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers were among the more active players in the offseason trading for Jerami Grant and signing free-agent Gary Payton II while also re-signing Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons (via player extensions) plus Jusuf Nurkic, Nassir Little and Drew Eubanks.
They also are high on their 19-year old rookie Shaedon Sharpe who some believe has the potential to be a star in this league. The only player of true consequence the Blazers lost was Eric Bledsoe who didn’t really fit into their plans.
Head coach, Chauncey Billups has a tall task on his agenda to improve the team’s defense. Grant and Payton will play a key role in that regard as they look to improve upon the worst defensive efficiency in the association and 29th ranked defense overall.
It’s difficult to know precisely what this team is given they actively tanked the second half of the 2021-22 campaign once Lillared exited to have surgery on the lingering abdominal strain.
To that end, Dame hasn’t looked close to his former self, and this isn’t a typical injury basketball players get so it’s difficult to know what the recover timeframe will be or if he’ll ever fully recover his previous form.
Sacramento Kings
It’s no secret the Kings are on a mission to make the playoffs as the league’s most futile mark in that regard. It’s been 16 years so Mike Brown will be tasked with ending that drought.
The roster is more cohesive than it’s been in years with a healthy complement of contributors at every position, a good mix of youth and vets as well as a healthy mix of offensive/defensive players.
De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis developed great chemistry in their short run together last season.
The Kings drafted Keegan Murray who is a dark horse to win rookie of the year (he and Bennedict Mathurin of the Pacers were the most impressive in Summer League and preseason play).
Sacramento then focused on developing around them upgrading the perimeter offense with the addition of Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk. This duo shoots 3-pointers with 38.9% and 39.1%.
If there are questions it would be the absence of copious two-way players and some of their best defensive players lacking length.
Overall though, the Kings should be poised to be in the play-in mix (at worst). Question- will it count if they make the play-in tourney and lose? Or do they have to make it to a playoff series to consider the drought being over? I wonder.

- The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between the clubs
Free Portland Trail Blazers vs Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
This should be a competitive contest with both teams wanting to get out to a strong season start. While the preseason isn’t necessarily a harbinger of what the regular season will bring (76ers were also unbeaten and lost their opener) I still think the Kings will prevail in this opening game.
