Monday, March 7th, the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves play for the fourth and final time this season. Minnesota will be looking for the clean sweep of the season having accumulated wins on December 12th (116-111), January 25th (109-107), and March 5th (134-121).
The teams are playing consecutive games against each other with the Wolves hosting both. Minny is looking to extend their win streak to five in a row while the Blazers seek to end their losing streak which has reached four in a row.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers taking two of the three contests. The Nuggets have won 87 of the 126 matches played versus the Wolves all-time.
Portland Trail Blazers
All season the debate has been whether the power has shifted to the East and it sure feels like that is the case. Although the best records are held by three Western teams that’s somewhat a product of facing an easier conference and in that regard, it’s true the power has shifted.
For example, five Western teams have won between 30 and 25 games against their own conference whereas the East has only three teams who’ve won 28 to 25 games against Eastern opponents.
In past seasons when the Bucks and Raptors or 76ers, Bucks, and Nets sat atop the East there was typically a gap after those top two to three teams. This season that’s occurring in the West.
Granted there are numerous players out injured in the West such as Kawhi Leonard and Paul George of the Clippers, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. of the Nuggets, Klay Thompson returning late this season plus Draymond Green missing substantial time.
Those injuries add up to victories for the elite teams and in most cases result in losses to the teams missing core talent as the Blazers discovered without Damian Lillard in the mix.
Anfernee Simons (quad) is out while Justise Winslow (Achilles), and Eric Bledsoe (Achilles) were downgraded to out on Monday.
Didi Louzada Silva (knee), Jusuf Nurkic (plantar fasciitis), and Damian Lillard (abdominal) are out indefinitely. Joe Ingles (ACL) and Nassir Little (shoulder) are out for the season.
Minnesota Timberwolves
I’m not sure if it was winning that 3-point challenge All-Star weekend or that he’s getting extra touches with Ant-Man out but Karl-Anthony Towns is on fire and more importantly enjoying basketball again.
The grin runs ear to ear which is something we haven’t seen from the talented big in copious seasons. He’s finally winning and doing it with a group of players he likes.
In the win on Saturday, he posted a robust stat line featuring a double-double of 36 points and 15 boards along with five assists and three blocks. He shot a highly efficient 13 of 17 (missed all four 3-point attempts) and was 10 for 11 from the line. And he did it all in 34 minutes.
Malik Beasley was ejected for a head butt in the last game so might receive further penalty forcing him to miss a game, but nothing reported yet.
Anthony Edwards (knee) was downgraded to out while Patrick Beverley (knee), Naz Reid (hamstring), and Taurean Prince (back) are all questionable for Monday. McKinley Wright IV is nursing an elbow injury that will keep him out indefinitely.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
No reason to believe the Blazers will back off tanking (did you see that injury report?) or the Wolves off trying to move up higher to secure a confirmed playoff seed. And, yeah 15.5 is a massive spread but the Blazers will barely be able to put any experienced players on the court.
