Saturday, March 5th, the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves begin a two-game stint that will finish on Monday. These two games will complete the season series that the Wolves lead 2-0.
In their initial meeting on December 12th, Minny won 116-111 and followed it up with another victory (109-107) on January 25th.
The Blazers last played on Wednesday suffering a 90-120 beatdown by the shorthanded Suns. The Wolves are completing a back-to-back set they started on Friday via a 138-101 pummeling of the Thunder.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers taking two of the three contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Timberwolves in 87 of their 125 matches.
Portland Trail Blazers
It does seem like the Blazers have raised the white flag but players are competitors so losses are never a given. In fact, looking at the roster the players getting the most run currently have that competitive edge – like Anfernee Simons.
The Blazers are 1.5 games back of the 10th seeded Pelicans and have lost three games in a row.
And we know Mr. Big Shot, Chauncey Billups hates to lose. Speaking of Billups he’s in a very precarious position. The franchise appears to want to lose to improve their draft position but by losing he’s not reinforcing why he should remain the coach.
Neil Olshey was the man who hired him and he’s gone. Damian Lillard and recently Jusuf Nurkic appear to be shut down for the remainder of the season – sending the signal they had tossed in the towel.
To reiterate- where does that leave Billups?
Josh Hart will sit for rest while Eric Bledsoe (Achilles) and Justise Winslow (Achilles) were downgraded to out. Jusuf Nurkic was shut down for the next month with plantar fasciitis (read that’s it for the season).
Didi Louzada Silva (knee), and Damian Lillard (abdominal) are out indefinitely. Joe Ingles (ACL) and Nassir Little (shoulder) are out for the season.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves continue to win (on a current three-game streak) but aren’t making up any ground because the teams immediately bookending them are also winning.
Minny sits in the seventh seed holding a 1.5 edge over the Clippers and a 7-game edge over the Lakers. With 18 games remaining barring something drastic occurring it’s likely the Wolves won’t fall below eighth.
As for the upper end of the playoff spectrum, they can still move up and cement a berth to the postseason to avoid the play-in tournament but it will be difficult.
They currently trail the Nuggets, Mavericks, and Jazz by 2.5 and 3.5 and 5.0 games respectively. Although unlikely to move up they do play the Nuggets once more and the Mavericks twice.’
Anthony Edwards (knee) is questionable. McKinley Wright IV is nursing an elbow injury that will keep him out indefinitely.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
This should be an easy set of wins for the Wolves as long as Billups, Simons et el play ball – – well not the right analogy but you get the drift.
While the spread seems very rich consider the Blazers’ point differential in their last three games that featured the Warriors (-37), Nuggets (-32), and shorthanded Suns (-30).
