Wednesday, January 19th, finds the Portland Trail Blazers facing the Miami Heat in their second and final meeting of this season. Miami won the initial match on January 5th (115-109).
Both teams played on Monday with the Blazers winning 98-88 versus the Magic while the Heat beat the Raptors 104-99.
Last season the clubs played twice each winning on the road. The Trail Blazers hold the all-time record with 41 wins in 66 matches versus the Heat.
Portland Trail Blazers
After an 18 game absence due to a punctured lung, CJ McCollum made his return to the hardwood on Monday but did so without his All-Star teammate Damian Lillard.
The latter underwent surgery to correct abdominal tendinopathy that he’s suffered with on and off for several seasons and flared up this summer at the Olympics.
While the Blazers star backcourt was sidelined Anfernee Simons has rushed into the spotlight to showcase why he probably should’ve been getting more run prior to the injuries.
In the 14 games he’s played while McCollum was out, Simons has averaged 18.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists shooting 41.6% on 8.1 attempts from the perimeter.
Lillard (abdominal) will miss at least six weeks of playing time and possibly as much as two months. At that point, depending on where the Blazers are seeded they might elect to shut him down for the season and go into tank mode.
C.J. Elleby (ankle) is upgraded to probable, Norman Powell is downgraded to doubtful, Cody Zeller (knee) and Larry Nance Jr. (knee) are out on Wednesday.
Miami Heat
That the Heat navigated so many injuries and continued to win highlighted just how strong their internal player development staff is. Max Strus and Gabe Vincent lit up the perimeter while Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo were sidelined giving Erik Spoelstra another offensive option to his system.
But perhaps the player who best showcases their prowess in development is rookie Omer Yurtseven. For a period Dewayne Dedmon joined Adebayo and Butler and even PJ Tucker missed games leaving the Heat devastated upfront.
Through his initial 24 appearances, he was averaging 9.6 minutes collecting 3.7 points and 3.8 rebounds. Then because of the injuries he got thrown into the starting lineup and during that period averaged a double-double of 13.6 points and 13.9 rebounds (3.9 OR) with 2.9 assists and a steal.
With Adebayo back, Yurtseven got no run on Monday and Bam delivered 14 points (4 of 12) and nine rebounds. Now that the Heat are healthy and have options upfront its plausible Yurtseven could get some minutes when the Heat face some of the better centers but he’ll serve as a backup to the backups.
Jimmy Butler was masterful in the win delivering a triple-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. With the Raptors using only seven players (and one just nine minutes) they ran out of gas late and with them playing their third game in four days Butler took over in clutch time.
Kyle Lowry (personal) and KZ Okpala (wrist) were downgraded to out Wednesday. Markieff Morris (neck) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Keep an eye on the Heat this week. They’re in a virtual tie with the Bulls for first in the East and I’m betting they’ll be the top team before the week is over including netting a victory versus the Blazers.
The 8.5 spread is a bit rich but I think Miami is due for a big 3-point performance and with the Blazers ranking last (37.5%) in perimeter efficiency this could get ugly fast.
