The first game victory by the Portland Trail Blazers versus the Los Angeles Lakers was considered an upset. But was it?
The Blazers entered the match already fully invested in winning having to do so seven times in nine games just to earn the playoff berth.
Meanwhile, the Lakers showed up to Game 1 expecting to flip a switch that seemed to blow a fuse instead of the desired playoff intensity they required.
Portland Trail Blazers
The craziest part about the Blazers Game 1 win was they didn’t even play that well compared to the games they had to win to get into the playoffs.
There were some similarities such as Damian Lillard taking over late and hitting 3-pointers from close to the logo with relative ease. Yet, on a whole, they shot poorly and looked a bit fatigued from the exploits of what it took to get there.
Lillard led the way with a pedestrian 35 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Jusuf Nurkic played big delivering a double-double before half time, finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Carmelo Anthony also registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while CJ McCollum chipped in 21 points as the other double-figure contributor.
Zach Collins will miss at least the next three games due to a malleolar ankle stress reaction and Nassir Little is out dealing with dehydration.
Los Angeles Lakers
LeBron James did his part with a massive triple-double of 26 points, 16 assists, and 17 rebounds. Anthony Davis delivered a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds. But it wasn’t enough.
Only two other Lakers scored in double-digits as Kyle Kuzma dropped 14 and Danny Green pitched in 10.
Perhaps most concerning was how the Lakers closed out the game. They battled back from being down 16 points in the first half and were holding a six-point lead (87-81) at 7:21 of the final frame. But from that point forward scored only six more points.
They missed 11 of their 14 shot attempts, six of which were 3-pointers, had two shots blocked (including one of LeBron’s) and Davis and James missed both their free throw attempts.
Potentially, concerning is the injury report lists LeBron (groin) and Davis (knee) although both are probable. Rajon Rondo (fractured thumb) is listed as questionable.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
As noted previously the biggest Lakers weakness is stopping good backcourts and the Blazers are about as good as it gets.
Additionally, this already feels like a must-win for the Lakers and we all know that means LeBron will take his game to another level to make sure LA wins and I hate to say it but I also anticipate an extremely Laker-friendly whistle.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Blazers +6.5
As much as I don’t feel confident in these Lakers being able to put points on the board- it’s hard to not side with LeBron instigating whatever is necessary to get the W. That said I think it’ll be a closer game than the spread.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
