Despite being a more talented, better basketball team, the Blazers are without center Jusuf Nurkic for the rest of this season and possibly next following the same injury Paul George so famously endured a few years back. They’re also without CJ McCollumn with a knee strain until potentially the end of the regular season.
Hence why this team actually isn’t in as great of position as it would seem on paper, and hence why a better basketball team with a whole lot more talent would be five-point underdogs against the Detroit Pistons.

If the Pistons want to win this game—and the way the playoff race out East is shaping up, you’d better believe they want to win this game—they need to follow the formula the New Orleans Pelicans used last postseason against the Trail Blazers in Round 1.
New Orleans, a No. 6 seed without homecourt advantage, took down No. 3 Portland in grand fashion. They took the ball out of Damian Lillard’s hands near halfcourt as often as possible, they made other players make plays and they ultimately won the series 4-0.

The reason this strategy is suddenly so important is that the Blazers are missing their next two playmakers from the lineup. McCollum, another player capable of eclipsing 20 points on any given night, is nowhere to be found, and Nurkic, who was having a career year, is absent as well.
This one will come down to how dominant Lillard can be with the ball in his hands and how players like Al-Farouq Aminu, Enes Kanter, Mo Harkless and possibly Jake Layman perform on the offensive end.
If Detroit can get the ball out of Lillard’s hands and continue playing solid defense the rest of the possession, the players we just named aren’t consistent enough to give Portland the edge.
