Thursday, December 12, finds two Northwest Division squads the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets tipping off in their second meeting between each other this season. In the first game on October 23, the Nuggets won 108-100.
Last season, the squads played four times with the teams splitting the contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 98 of their 181 matches.
Portland Trail Blazers
After losing three of their last four games the Blazers got some relief in the form of the New York Knicks who they beat handily 115-87.
Five Blazers reached double-figure scoring with Hassan Whiteside delivering a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds. Damian Lillard led the scoring effort with 31 points.
Carmelo Anthony continues to fit in well with his new team and got the revenge of winning against his old team as he chipped in 16 points.
Anfernee Simons (16) and CJ McCollum (13) also reached double figures.
Two starters lead all the stat categories and not surprisingly Damian Lillard tops the scoring (26.9 points), assists (7.3) and steals (1.0). The other three categories are led by Hassan Whiteside including rebounds (12.5), field goal percentage (61.0%), and blocks (2.1).
Rodney Hood tore his Achilles and will miss the remainder of the season. Jusuf Nurkic (leg) remains out until February and Zach Collins (shoulder) won’t return until March.
Offense is on the minds of the Denver Nuggets and head coach Mike Malone who has witnessed his club deliver a top-level defense to the court and inexplicably suffer offensively.
Although the Nuggets boast arguably the deepest team in the Association they struggle to put points on the board and that cost them in their game against the 76ers. The play of their star Nikola Jokic is also in question as he appears to be out of shape and more concerningly not as invested.
He did make an effort versus the 76ers but it was inconsistent and led to 15 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds. Losing Jamal Murray early in the match when he took an elbow from Ben Simmons didn’t help their issues.
Will Barton scored 26 points to lead the team adding seven rebounds and seven assists.
Only two other Nuggets provided double-figure scoring as Gary Harris registered 14 points and Paul Millsap chipped in with 10 points.
In terms of individual team leaders, Jamal Murray leads in scoring (17.4 points) and steals (1.5) while Nikola Jokic tops the rebounds (10.0) and assists (6.3) categories. Paul Millsap captains the defense and also offers the best field goal percentage (47.8%) and blocks (0.8) category.
Denver hopes Jamal Murray will be able to suit up despite his trunk contusion but may be without Paul Millsap who is nursing a sore left foot.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction:
This should be an interesting game of cat and mouse since the Nuggets boast a stellar defensive squad while the Blazers hang their hats on offense.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Nuggets ATS
Mike Malone will have his squad dialed in to move the ball and get their offense rolling which should equate to Denver playing well on both sides of the hardwood. Portland will need to dial up their defensive effort if they have any hope of stealing a game in the high altitude of Denver.
