Friday, April 8th finds the Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks playing for the third and final time this season. Dallas will attempt to gain the season sweep having already won the December 27th (132-117) and January 26th (132-112) matches.
Portland is playing a back-to-back set losing 94-127 to the Pelicans on Thursday while the Mavericks played Wednesday routing the Pistons 131-113.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers winning two of the three contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 88 of their 166 matches.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Trail Blazers take tanking seriously. Once they elected to shut down Damian Lillard for the season the front office turned its attention to restructuring the roster.
That included trading CJ McCollum to the Pelicans plus Norman Powell and Robert Covington to the Clippers.
Still, it couldn’t be deemed a full-out rebuild, not with Dame still as the cornerstone talent on the club and young talented improving assets. Head coach Chauncey Billups gave rising star Anfernee Simons an increased role and he delivered.
In the 11 games after the McCollum trade, Billups started Simons who produced 24.3 points, 4.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and shot 43 percent from the perimeter on 10.3 attempts in 33.9 minutes.
In comparison to his production prior to the trade, in 46 games (18 starts) he was registering 15.7 points, 3.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and shooting 39.6 percent from deep on 7.1 attempts in 28.4 minutes per game.
He played only four games after the All-Star break and became one of the many core players shut down for the season as they focused on tanking (Portland has won just two games since returning from the break).
Brandon Williams (quad) played Thursday so should be good to go Friday while Justise Winslow (calf), Josh Hart (knee), and Trendon Watford (knee) are all questionable versus the Mavericks.
Eric Bledsoe (Achilles), Damian Lillard (abdominal), Joe Ingles (knee), Jusuf Nurkic (plantar fasciitis), Anfernee Simons (knee), and Nassir Little (shoulder) are out for the season
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks arrive on a hot streak with five wins in their last six games. All season Dallas has been among the top defensive clubs but since adding Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans at the trade deadline the offense is clicking too.
Head coach Jason Kidd has more options now and has utilized a small ball lineup that is feasting while other Mavericks are finding more space and it’s leading to better production.
For example, prior to the trade Reggie Bullock appeared in 48 games and hit three of more 3-pointers on 14 occasions with half of those occurring in a seven-game stretch in which Kristaps Porzingis played in one game and only 11:27 in the second.
The natural assumption is Kidd was already shifting the offense leading up to the trade with the Mavs intent on moving Porzingis. Still, since the trade Bullock has made three or more 3-pointers in 10 of the 18 games he’s played.
Sterling Brown (personal) and Theo Pinson (finger) are probable while Maxi Kleber (ankle) is questionable for Friday. Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is out indefinitely.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
The Mavericks want to begin the playoffs with home-court advantage and their magic number is down to one. The Jazz is the only team that can catch them sitting two games back with two to play (Suns, Blazers).
A Mavericks win or a Jazz loss will clinch the fourth seed so Dallas won’t take this game for granted. Portland hasn’t won since March 21st (Pistons) and as noted only twice (Wizards) since the All-Star Break.
But the issue isn’t whether Dallas will win but whether they’ll cover the 18 point spread and while it’s a rich spread I’m taking the swing and saying they do.
