Sunday, January 30th, finds the Portland Trail Blazers and the Chicago Bulls playing for the second and final time this season. Portland won the initial match 112-107 on November 17th.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Bulls losing 122-131 to the Spurs while the Blazers defeated the Rockets 125-110.
Last season the clubs played twice with the teams splitting each winning on the road. The Blazers hold the all-time record with 67 wins in 129 matches versus the Bulls.
Portland Trail Blazers
Despite being mired with injuries to their core the Blazers have turned a corner winning seven of their last 11 games. Diving deeper into those victories they include some elite and middle-tier teams.
So what has changed?
Part of the answer is the return of CJ McCollum, the ascendance of Anfernee Simons, and Jusuf Nurkic rediscovering his two-way game. But perhaps more than anything it’s the buy-in from the roster to Chauncey Billups defensive schemes.
On the season Portland ranks 28th defensively (114.0) but in the last 11 matches they’ve climbed up to 12th defensively (109.5). That’s also reflected in their opponent points allowing 112.3 on the season but 109.0 through the last 11 contests ranking 28th and 12th respectively.
One area they seem to be concentrating on is scoring in the paint moving from 20th (47.3) to 10th (45.6). However, that’s translated into more turnovers with the Blazers being more aggressive.
The Blazers are sacrificing opponent points scored off turnovers dropping from 14th (16.1) to 20th on opponent fast-break scoring (16.5).
CJ Ellerby (hamstring) and Larry Nance Jr. (knee) were downgraded to out Sunday. Damian Lillard (abdominal) and Cody Zeller (knee) are out indefinitely while Nassir Little (shoulder) is lost for the season.
It’s been a tough stretch for the Bulls who’ve lost three players for six to eight weeks. Although the Big 3 of DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Nikola Vucevic can carry the offensive needs the trio of players who are out impacting the Bulls defense.
In particular, Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso’s playmaking is missed but by far it’s their defensive prowess that is missed and speaks to why Chicago is struggling specifically in closing out games as opponents target the Big 3 knowing they aren’t as strong defensively.
Case in point, since Caruso got injured versus the Bucks in each of the last four games the Bulls have lost the final frame (Magic, Thunder, Raptors, Spurs). They split those games 2-2 but it punctuates the issues they’re having without their best defenders available.
Caruso (wrist), Ball (knee), and Derrick Jones Jr. (finger) will be out six to eight weeks. Patrick Williams (thumb) is lost for the season.

Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction
This isn’t a gimme for the Bulls given the improvement of the Blazers and the issues Chicago is having defensively. I’d still lean to the Bulls winning but Portland keeping the score close.
