On Wednesday, January 26th, the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz will meet for the second of their four matches this season. Phoenix won the first match 115-109 on January 24th and will host their third meeting on February 27th while the Jazz play host in the final game between the clubs on April 8th.
The teams are playing a home and home set that witnessed Phoenix take the first match 115-109 on Monday.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Suns sweeping the season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Jazz in 97 of their 190 matches
Phoenix Suns
Recently, I joked Chris Paul who is famously nicknamed the “Point God” should be renamed “the center whisperer” but in hindsight that assessment isn’t far off the mark. There are just certain players who make everyone around them better.
LeBron certainly is known for that (although Russell Westbrook is challenging that assessment). Kyle Lowry infamously improved any reserve who played beside him in Toronto and seems to be doing the same thing in Miami.
But Paul may be the best of them all, particularly when it comes to big men. Both Deandre Ayton and JaVale McGee have excelled playing with CP3 but as I’ve touched on previously, Frank Kaminsky and Jalen Smith played so well alongside Paul their trade value increased.
Bismack Biyombo adds the relevancy to punctuate this point. Initially picked up on a 10-day hardship contract the Suns have since signed him to a full contract and he’s performing at a level that rivals his very best years posting career-best points and assists performances.
The moral of this story is, while Smith or any of the Suns’ bigs might attract trade attention the teams seeking to acquire them better have a point guard who has the chops to deliver even a modicum of the level of Paul or the stats will look like fool’s gold.
Jae Crowder (wrist), Deandre Ayton (ankle), Abdel Nader (conditioning) are questionable for Wednesday. Frank Kaminsky (knee), Cameron Payne (wrist), and Dario Saric (knee) are out indefinitely.
Utah Jazz
Several of the elite clubs have sputtered recently but arguably no team has suffered more than the Jazz. Even as Steph Curry’s shot went AWOL for the first time in — well — forever, and without Draymond Green they’ve still found a way to play .500 ball and the Jazz were one of the teams they beat.
Part of the regression is based on core talents missing time like Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. Fatigue is setting in with the dog days of winter on hand but more concerning is the Jazz haven’t looked good on either end of the court.
To demonstrate their lapse comparing the season as a whole versus their production in the three key categories since the calendar flipped to 2022 is telling. For the season, the Jazz remains the top-ranked offense (115.9), are 12th defensively (108.9), and third for net rating with a plus +6.9 differential.
In 2022 they are 4-9 with the key categories highlighting the free fall. Offensively, they are still in a decent position but substantially lower in 10th (112.8), but defensively they drop to a tie for 24th (115.1) and shift to a negative net rating of minus -2.3 for the 19th rated net differential.
Rudy Gobert (calf), Donovan Mitchell (concussion), Bojan Bogdanovic (finger), Joe Ingles (ankle), and Royce O’Neale (knee) are all questionable for Wednesday.
